Thoughts on D975XBX2

Hey guys.

I'm in the games industry and was lucky enough to bump into a very cool Intel guy who sent me their D975XBX2 motherboard AND their Core 2 Quad Extreme (2.66) processor.

I'm now up and running in XP SP2 (waiting on Vista to really settle in before moving) and wondering what I should do about overclocking.

Right now I'm running stock and it's pretty quick. However, it's also running a bit hot (50-60 degrees).

The Intel rep said this processor has been checked and I could get just under 4GHz out of it with proper cooling. What should I be looking at there? Coolers are looking nuts to me right now. Everywhere I look they seem strange.

Also, on the sound front, I have an X-Fi in here but think it might be causing issues with my Nvidia 8800 GTS card. I was thinking of sticking with the default sound on the motherboard but had issues with it in surround mode. Plus the default volume was MUCH lower than the X-Fi and even at max was still fairly low.

Any input on what I should be doing to get the most out of this setup would be great. It seems, so far, like a pretty amazing board.

1. for an air cooler, I would recommend the Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme, which should run you about $70 with a fan.

2. The X-Fi shouldnt be causing any issues, but use stock sound anyway and see if it makes a difference. reinstall drivers as well.

good luck!

Okay, Thermalright I hadn't checked into. I was looking at Thermaltake but they seemed almost like a joke.

On the sound issue, if no one has a solution for the 5.1 problem then I can't really consider going back. I actually loved the sound of regular stereo with it.

It was just that all surround was nothing more than stereo sent to the surrounds.

I couldn't get anything to work as a 5.1 setup with it.
