BH-5 Help

Thread Starter
Hey guys, I just bought some GSkill BH-5 and I'm working on ocing it but I'm running into some issues and I'm curious if anybody has any answers. I know this stuff can do 250MHz easy but I am struggling to get it working at 211MHz right now. BH-5 is volt hungry stuff so I am feeding it 3v @ 211MHz but it's still fails Memtest 86+ (Test #5) within 2 minutes. I have the timings set to 2-2-2-5 1T and according to the kind fellow I bought them from he had them running at tighter timings than that @ 250MHz and 3.5v. Should I have to use 3.1v to get to 211?! I didn't expect to have to use that much voltage for so little progress but maybe that's just the way BH-5 runs. Please if you can give me any info it'd be much appreciated. Reps for useful info. Thanks all!

Yea sometimes you just hit a wall and need to push it that bit further then it won't stop after that

Put it at 3.5V and see if it goes higher. If not you know the guy was lying (did you see any screenies of him running the RAM at 250MHz with tighter timings?)

Well I just put a 90mm fan on them so that I can crank up the voltage without any worries so I will try bumping them to 3.2v and see what happens. As well I found a bit of a setup guide for BH5 here so I may try that as well.

I didn't see any screenies of them before I bought them but I trust the guy that sold them to me. He is a reputable member on this forum and has been very helpful so I don't want to make any kinds of accusations or anything. I just need any advice that others like you have regaurding ocing this kind of memory. Keep the suggestions coming and I'll keep my progress posted.

Ahh well if they were off this forum then i would trust the source. I thought you meant Ebay or something

All there is to know about this RAM is that they love high volts.

Which means you may actually have to put them at 3.5 to get any more out of them. I remember my 3700+ was 2.9 stable @ 1.35Vcore but it took 1.55 just to get it stable @ 2.97

Sometimes upping the volts by a little doesn't help at all.

Also if you don't min sacraficing the timings you could lower them a bit just for testing. Then when you get the required frequency just tighten the timings as much as they will go

good luck, Iced.

Alright so I've made some progress here. I was testing my memory with test #5 on memtest and it wouldn't pass for more than a minute. I decided to try out test #8 and the memory run flawlessly! I don't know why only test #5 would be giving me problems so I will have to do some research on that. Otherwise though I have the memory running at 230MHz 2-2-2-5 1T @ 3.1v and still going up. I'm very encouraged but kinda confused about this issue with memtest #5. Anybody have any input on the matter?

Test each module individually to see which one is the strongest and then place that one closest to the CPU. Test #8 is actaully more difficult to pass but run 10-15 loops to be sure the timings are stable, it may not always be voltage. The BH modules will operate differently with various MBs, if the previous owner was using a nF4 MB then this may explain the higher speed. GL but do keep them cool ...

Thanks for the input. I'll test them individually at some point to see if that tells me anything, otherwise if they are passing test #8 I think i'll call that good enough for now. Running 245MHz 2-2-2-5 1T @ 3.1v now.

And yes, you will probably have to crank the volts to make much of any headway. But, once you do, they will reward you greatly

It's my old RAM. My Super Pi 1M run shows it at 1.5-2-2-2 at 259 Mhz. If I remember right, that was 3.5v, it could do that at 1.5-2-2-0 with 3.6.

Namrac, did you ever have problems with memtest #5?

Not that I remember. Just had problems going over 260 with 3.5v, no matter what the timings, but you're nowhere near that.
