I agree, it would be interesting to see the two compared.

It is good that they have a card that can compete with the 8800's, now they need a card that can compete with what most people will be buying, the 8600's.

If those are the results of the 2900XT 512MB, surely the 1GB version will be better though?

Yup.
The 2900XT IMO, was a success. It doesn't beat the 8800GTX, but it manages to beat the 8800GTS(320 and 640) and it's priced where it performance stands. Maybe future drivers will further it's improvement, and for those of you saying that it's a "furnace" or that it takes an energy plant to power it up, STOP WHINING...especially if you have an 8800. I just had to get that out there.

most likley not, not too many games depend on that much memory, just look at the 256mb 7900GT vs the 512mb 7950GT, almost identical frame rates, same for the 8800GTS, and these are cards that start at under 512mb, any greater and it doesn't make too much of a difference.

Yea back in 2006....but this is 2007. We have new games coming out for DX10 that may use more than 512Mb of video memory at hi-res with AF and AA enabled. I'm sure Crysis will have some massive textures...

They are using old benchmarks with 97.92 drivers for the 8800GTs. and it is barely beating it in every thing but Oblivion though I must say wow on the oblivion..too bad I don't like the game. The HD2900Xt costs $400 the last time I checked and bought this 8800GTS about three days ago for $266. This review is comparing apples to oranges.

Decent performance though...but a much better value with the 8800GTS I'm afraid.
Because Oblivion isn't Nvidia optimized.

I go for the best value...nothing more.

I am not a fan boy...the only true fan boys are the people who call others fanboys

Show me one review and I'll point out the problems with it. I have yet to see an honest one

...and forget the 640MB GTS...personaly I think its crazy to get one of those over a GTX. Wait till your next paycheck and spend a $120 more.

Compare the 320...as that is going to be the real competition for the HD2900 until games start needing more memory. But I highly doubt that will happen with in the next year. And the way it is looking there maybe 8800GTS that will be aproaching the $200 mark after a rebate. I don't know if the 2900's can be cut that low.

Drop the DX10 crap too...none of these 8800 or 2900 will be all that great at DX10 and that is not going off those stupid patches. There are DX10 demos that are nothing more than pre-rendered slide shows and none of the cards did very good in them fps wise...people put faith in 3DMark06, these demos are about the same thing. Though I haven't seen a test done with the 1GB version of the HD2900XT...and after closer examination this test was done with a 512MB version. That there makes me want to through this out the window*edit* I see now that it was just the OP's mistake on what version of 2900 was being tested. It's cool...I've made that mistake before too.

What do you want to throw out the window?

The card in this test is 100% a 512MB

the title needs to be changed...yeah it flat out says it a 512MB version

dang I really would like to see a 1GB in action...in a fair test where both the GTS and the 2900 is hooked up to the same rigs(but tested on a couple different ones) and are using the latest drivers.

I saw a review of the 512MB 2900XT about a week ago that was comparing it to a GTS with the original drivers it was released with. Who installs hardware and uses the driver CD?

Plus I've seen some where if youlooked close at the 3DMark scores the 2900 had higher CPU scores...The CPU score in 3DMark should not change much if at all with a different GPU attached.

I just want to see a fair, un-biased gaming test...is that so much to ask for? If I can see a test were the 2900 makes it worth the extra money I will return this 8800GTS in a heart beat. What I consider worth it is basically 1% more performance for each $5 more. So to justify paying a $100 more for a GPU I want 20% more perforamance. Which really isn't a lot either...but its the standard I have set for my self.
