Broadband Question

Thread Starter
Well I am visiting my grandmother for a few days and I want to get online with my laptop, I figured it would be plug and play like every other broadband, as she has no password or anything of the sort, but it gives me the "little to no connectivity" bs i tried making a new connection, repairing and restarting, but still the same thing, any ideas?

Also one more thing, anyone know why my DSL at home goes out in rain/thunderstorms? It seems like every rumble of thunder kicks me off dsl.

well if its add your and add your grandmothers house its not the internet that does it but ur laptop or pc.

check your modem for any firewalls, if u have needed ports open and if u have firewall on ur laptop check that 2.

does this happen with any other laptops or computers 2??

At home I plug right in, works fine both wirelessly and wired. I didnt set up anything.

Here I get the little to no connectivity, as for what you mentioned about ports and the like. Broadband doesnt use any ports that Im around aware of, only programs do that. Seeing as how the ports are on your modem, it wouldnt have to open a port for itself

First of all, you should always unplug your dsl during a thunderstorm, I've seen countless fried computer parts because of lightning (a network card and power supply of my own).

As for the router problem, there are a few things you can do, assuming you know how to get to the router config. If your grandparents don't keep up with their router you should first update their firmware. You should also check the DHCP settings and make sure its on if your IP starts with 169. And if your laptop has a wireless switch on the case of the computer make sure its off. If all else fails, hit the reset button on the router and try again.

the electrical interference from storms causes issues with phone signals. its fine for the 8kbit channel you use for voice but the frequencies for data transmission get mashed.

thus the signal degrades and the modem drops out and tries to reconnect.

From what you are saying i'm assuming that you are plugging straight into the modem and not a router, correct?
a lot of companies require you to register mac address on the first device inside the modem.

If you are connected to a router, check the settings of your grandmothers computer with an ipconfig /all and see how yours is different, check back with what you have.
