OCing Pentium D 940

Thread Starter
I just built a new computer. EVGA 680i TR motherboard, OCZ 2GB DDR2 800 (5-5-5-15), Pentium D 940 (obvisously), Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme, and Ultra 600W XVS PSU.

Right now, I've got it at 3.84GHz.. I'm still at stock volts for everything... I want to get up to like 4.2GHz but I can't seem to get there. I can boot into Windows at 4.1GHz but Orthos always fails in a minute or two. I've tried changing the volts around but I still can't get it. I can't even POST if I set the CPU to 4.2GHz..the motherboard always resets to stock settings and says cpu is not stable... I'm not sure what settings I need to put for voltages... Here's a screenshot of nVidia Monitor... My CPU temps run kinda high even though I have a Ultra 120 Extreme and using AS5.

Raise vcore notch or two
run RAM at rated speed 2.0-2.2v
run RAM at 1:1 divider
set the pci to 33 and the pci-e to 100

my pd 945 3.4 does 4500mhz and for benchmarks i can hit 4800mhz. Keep playing with it maybe up your chipset voltages and lower the memory divider maybe your memory is your limiting factor.

You need to up your Vcore for that chip, 1.3 will get you no where near your goal. I would suggest a Vcore under 1.55V for a Pentium D. you can set your desired Vcore (let say 1.5V) and increase the FSB till it's no longer stable for tourture test up to ( let say, the time your think you will 100% utilize your pc in a day).

I just noticed my ram is supposed to be 5-5-5-12 but bios automatically set it to 5-5-5-15. Should I change this?

I tried boosting vcore up a bit, I put ram at 2.1v, and fsb to 1.3v and I tried many different configurations of this and whenever I tried to oc to 4.2GHz, it never works. My mobo says it goes to system safe mode.

Keep RAM as loose as possible and what are temps at that point could be cooling or just not enough voltages?

I'm not sure cause I never got into Windows... Bios was probably like 45-48C. Right now, I'm at 4.1GHz... I raised the vcore to 1.375v but everything is on auto and I'm idling at 41C... It's not stable though, Orthos fails almost as soon as I hit start.

your going to need more then 1.375 does your motherboard show any vcore droop. Like mine i have it set to 1.55 in bios after droop its around 1.37-1.47. For me to run 4.41ghz i only need 1.475 in bios after droop its 1.33-1.44.

yah i have vcore set to 1.39v but cpu-z shows 1.35v and on load is goes down to like 1.31 or 1.32v

---

Edit: I tested the vcore at every notch from like 1.35v up to 1.41875v while at 4.1GHz and every time the computer freezes after a few minutes of running Orthos. At 1.41875v, the idle was 42-44C and load got up to 56C. I don't even think I can go up to 1.475v without being over 60C which I don't really want to do. I don't even really like being at 56C. Is the computer freezing because there is not enough voltage going to it? Should I try upping it some more or just upping some other voltage? I want to at least be stable at 4GHz. I was hoping for more though.
