Cable Wifi Question

Thread Starter
I am not familiar with cable because I use DSL. I have to help my girlfriend setup a wireless connection with her laptop next week but she has cable. The ISP is Earthlink but I don't know the modem/router model. In fact, I don't even know for sure if the modem/router supports wireless.
  • What happens if it does have wireless? Does it work the same way as DSL? (Go to the router's IP address to configure it? Such as, http://192.168...?
  • What if it doesn't? I'm assuming I would have to buy something..

ok does she have a router and a modem? because most modems that come with a cable connection dont act as routers. You will need to buy one. If she has a modem and the router you have to connect to the modem and type in the info to get your connection started. Then you plug in the router and plug the computer up to the router with an ethernet cable and go to the 1.9.168.*.* address. Once you connect ot the router see if wireless is on and if it is test it.

Yes all you need is a wireless router. Cable connects to the modem, RJ-45 or 8P8C cable from the modem goes in the WAN port of the router, router goes to all computers in range. The router will probably have a setup disk that guides you though the setup of your network name, however you will probably have to setup up security on your own.

And sP00N, I think you mean 192.168.*.*
