Well i am thinking of spending about £300 on just a cpu, mobo, ram, and hdd.

This is my idea

if you can manage it go for the core 2 quad the q6600 its £173 i think.from scan aswell

yeah it would...thats a shame and i wouldnt recomend changing anything else there, good chioce of parts. will you be overclocking?

Excellent choices, to be honest. No point getting a quad-core. Dual-cores have only just began being fully used (as in, both cores actually being used fully).

Depending on what you're actually using the computer for, and how important money is to you (being at uni, im sure its very important), might be worth considering (not saying you should) a AMD S939 build. Could save quite a lot.

nah am2 if your going amd ddr2 rams cheaper than ddr and the processors are cheaper and easier to come by

Nah i don't like amd anymore my mother in law has one and it is sooooooooooo slow in comparison to mine same clock speed and cache and same ram too and mine is just so much faster and she has 1/3rd the stuff on hers and runs no where near as much as i do so intel it will be plus the ££££ is a grant of £250 which i don't have to pay back
