Trying to figure out how best to spend the 100 bucks or so I've got from selling stuff in the for sale section ...

If your power goes out a lot, or if you work on important files a lot and don't want to risk losing it it would be a smart idea to invest in one. They also provide cleaner power as well. Right now I am running on a high end surge protector and we have pretty clean power at my house. A UPS is on my to get list though.

I bought mine at Circuit city for ~$60. It lasts about 15 minutes with my entire rig and one monitor being powered. Just since this summer, Ive experienced 3 power outtages, 3 "undervoltages,".. The great thing about UPS is that if you lose power, it will shut your computer down (soft shutdown) when the battery runs low, or it will keep it running until the power comes back up. Not to mention the HUGE amount of power it would take to kill one, it is a reasonable protection against lightning.

What's so good about a UPS thing besides the back up power?

If you already have a decent surge protector shouldn't that do you just fine assuming you don't need back up power?

Those things are too expensive

Yup, got one....600watt one for my sig rig....Runs my stuff for about 20 minutes if the power goes out...Very nice if you are in a game when the power goes out so you can save and maybe check your email or something before you have to shut down...that is, if you have the modem connected like i do also. Very good investment IMO if you have outages or brownouts a lot. And, no they really aren't expensive anymore...mine was like 90 bucks...That's not really expensive considering that the battery lasts for 15-20 minutes on a full load, lol

If you look at the amount of power a surge protector can protect against vs what a UPS can take you'd be surprised. Ill try to find a link, but the difference is massive.
