You know...if you are using a router you will already have a firewall that in most cases is far better than any software one you could find.

The only cases where software is better is if you are actually being attacked by controlled attack...or a very sophisticated bot. Such attacks take alot of skill and a lot of equipment and crackers with that fall in those catagories could careless about us small fries...

hardware firewall(routers)...very tough but it can't re-act and change to stop a sophisticated attack. But on a bot attack it will nearly always block it.

Software firewall...They continually scan ports and run various cycles that look for diffent code and this weakens them, you could say that the programs resources are all spread out. On occation a bot program can hack through it.

I do have a router but how can I be sure that it's got a firewall built in?

It's one of the Linksys routers, and I'm too tired to go check on what it is right but will do so in the morn.

Pretty much every router has the function of filtering port accesses. Unless yours is very old, it should have a built-in firewall.

Do keep in mind that no matter how good a software firewall is, it's still a piece of written prog using codes/scripts which means they can be broken through. And, much easier than breaking through a router's firewall.

log into you router and check all the settings you will see a firewall setting. Also a good place to learn more about your router.

If it's wireless G then you most likely have a WRT54-G b/c they are the original VW Bug of routers and they do come with a built in firewall. Also what ISP do you have? If you have Comcast, they include a free Security package from McAfee, if not the above suggestions are good for a personal firewall.

Doh! I totally forgot about that, and I learned the other day that Hope College also is giving me free antivirus (which i suspect to be Norton) just for going there which is pretty sweet.
