GPU Overclocking...

Thread Starter
Ok, So im happy with how my computer performs at the moment, its a good system and runs games well, But ive recently been thinking about overclocking the GPU...However, im a bit hesitent, since i know it can cause issues such as overheating and damage the hardware, Im hoping people could tell me weather or not they think it is worth it for my system, My systems specs are....

Nvidia GeForce 6600 256MB (94.41)
768MB DDR 400 Ram
3200+ 2.0GHZ ~~ (3.2 Intel Equivelant)

Those are the basics, and Im running COH vanilla on high graphics with high textures, PP, Model Detail, Model Quality, Shader Quality all high, the only things low are AA is off, shadows low, and Tree Quality Low...

I can also run Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 with Medium Textures, no AA, high effects, high environment detail, and 1024*768 Resolution (its a mediumhigh setting)

Both games run with about 18-20fps, and the lowest fps is normally about 10, which I find more then playable, id rather have a great looking game and crap play-a-bility, then crap looking game...

So with that in mind, would overclocking my card do anything huge to my system in terms of performance? Would I be able to further increase my graphics settings?

Also keep in mind if I do decide to overclock, I WILL be using nTune, NVIDIA's tool, the only tool im willing to use.
Unless there is a good reason to use another tool such as nTune stuffs this up at times.

Also, what is a good amount to overclock, ive looked at the default clocks via nTune and they were 300MHZ and 500MHZ

Overclocking your card minus phase and a vmod wouldn't benifit too much except on benches. You might see maybe 3-5 FPS increase?

fill out your comp specs in your user cp

vmod=voltmod

phasechange uses compressors to cool your cpu

Your card will recieve more than a 5-6fps increase expect 10-20 depending on how far you take it, if you can get a extra 100mhz out of your card you will recieve a huge boost like 10-15% increase in performance.

IMO overclocking a 6600 series will not return much performance gains at all.

It never hurts to try. If your temps are fine and there are no artifacts your card should be fine. So just download ATItool and go for it, and see if it helps your fps.

This system seems crud, and it is kinda, but it runs everygame i know of COH on max graphics and GRAW2 on Medium High

Boris4ka, How much do you suggest to increase it by? I did 50MHZ last night, only because I have no idea what a "safe" level is

first use auto tune to see where the card can go then increase it in5-10mhz increases.first do the core until it artifacts then back it down, then do the same with the memory. i suggest turning fan control to manual and increasing it yourself.

A good way is in ATItool to just click "find max mem" and then "find max core" (order you do it in doesn't matter) and then let it do it for you. Stop it as soon as it begins to artifact and give errors, and lower the speed 10Mhz. That's how I did it, and I got around 70fps increase in the 3D cube in ATItool, and 10fps increase in games. And also watch your temps.
