8600GT/GTS Benchmark Compilation - Page 2

You guys forget:

1. 3DMark is a joke, the drivers are optimized for it, thus the better scores, compare them all across a few games a few games and the 8600's are beaten across the board by the 7950, and usually by the 7900GS.

2. One benchmark suite is not enough to judge a video card, Nvidia cards are better in Quake 4 than ATI cards, so a weaker Nvidia card might beat a normally stronger ATI card. Also Nvidia and is not stupid, their drivers are heavily optimized for 3DMark, they are a benchmark wonder, however in games they don't perform as well.

GuardianOdin: Very impressive voltmod, I don't mean to offend 8600 owners, just saying that they don't perform as well in games as 3DMark would lead you to believe they would. How does your card perform voltmodded? do you have any other cards you could benchmark it against to show us how much it improved?

I just have the 8600 now, I switched from a XFX 6800GT.For games like City of Heroes,World in Conflict and even the new Lost Planet the 8600GT runs very smoothly. I average 28-37FPS. I know those are not killer numbers but it serves what I want from the card for. Games like City of Heroes which is OpenGL based the card is insanely great, every option on max plus the benefit of Physics.

We all know the 8600 (which ever version VMod or not) is still a mid-low range card, but a lot of us it works wonders. Ran in SLI I have plenty of confidence in this card.

The MSI 8600gt thats on my wifes comp in my sig runs NWN2 which is considered the most demanding game currently. Card overclocked nicely without even one mod. Im sure I could have gotten more because temps never reached over 49c but the generic psu had very low amps on the 12 volt rail. 18 amps to be precise.

At 1280x1024 resolution I can play the game at low textures but max texture filtering no AA and low shadows. Game averages 40fps with just under 30fps minimum and highest being 60fps.

Here is an example of how the game looks while being very playable. I would say running another in SLI would definately allow even more quality settings since the 8600s seem to SLI the best out of every card I have seen. BTW everything I have read shows any of the current 8800 series card have difficulty running the game at max settings while still being playable.

I have noticed a trend also with newer games that they are becoming more CPU dependent rather than graphics. I would imagine this is an intel marketing ploy since their cpus are leading the way for gamers and seem to benefit better for newer games. The reason that I see with newer games is that they arent really improving greatly with graphics since they have pretty much capped the resolution barrier with newer hardware. The newer games seem to be more script intensive which multiple core cpus seem to lead the way in playing the games smoothly while having more consistent frame rates.

On a side note I have noticed that the 8600 series cards seem to overclock the best with stock cooling and dont heat up very much. This card under extreme load never goes over 50c although I have never seen it actually go above 49c in ATitool. Hands down this is the fastest video card I have seen that does not require an auxiliary power connection. Video cards that require auxilary power including the 8600GTS model would definately have more power but at the cost of higher temps from what I have experienced and seen. Heat is the main enemy of most overclockers and will be an extra expense that most will not realize till they actually overclock.

To sum up I would say if you wanted to overclock a card that does not get very hot and requires no additional cooling then this is a very good card. I havent run it in SLI but I would imagine the numbers would be impressive from everything I have ever seen on the card

Well, basing your opinion on cards that you've never owned solely from benchmarks is a joke.

I've owned the 7900GT, x1950pro, 8800GTS 320mb AND 640mb, and I firmly believe that not only does my 8600GT outperform all cards I listed besides the 8800, it is BY FAR the most of my money's worth I've ever gotten on a gpu purchase.

It is funny how many people bashing 8600GT's have never personally owned and tested them against all of these other cards that are "better". I have.

Good reading:

The 8600 is one of the best stock OC'ing cards I've ever seen. I have the vf700 on mine more for the noise issue... mine never went past 65C at 650 core on the stock cooler, with the vf700 I've never seen it go over 53C at 680 core which is my 24/7 clock.

Regarding the heat issue, I copied this from another reply I made in another thread:

Just the heat issues alone made me more than happy to ditch my GTS. I was pissed when I got that card and had add two 120mm fans into my side panel and run the cooler at 100% just to OC it 100mhz on the core.

The free edition runs @ default settings, which is the standard for comparison (for the most part, like on OCN's Top 30).

And 5455 points is not bad at all with your CPU/Video card combination.

Any more details/pics you can give us, TopGun?

PS: and your English is fine, I understood you perfectly.
