8600GT/GTS Benchmark Compilation - Page 4

Thread Starter
Yeah, we'll have to wait and see when games coded in DX10 actually come out. They were/are supposed to be coded more efficient and therefore be faster than DX9, but all we've really seen so far are DX9 games with DX10 patches (that perform less than great).

Hopefully they do make things smoother, because IMO that would suit some of the midrange/budget DX10 cards nicely and give them a good place in the gaming market, at least for a few years to come.

i own 2 PNY 8600GT cards (1 for 2-3 months, and second since today) and was wondering, if anyone overclocked them. Cause i can raise gpu core to 675-700 mhz ok, but memory i raise by like 25mhz and it makes games crash and freeze lol. So i wonder if i should volt mod it.

PS : Benchmarks in my system sig

could be a couple of things, only using a stock cooler or pny might have put crappy ram on it, try just oc'ing the ram first see if u can go higher with the gpu core on stock speeds

Just the heat issues alone made me more than happy to ditch my GTS. I was pissed when I got that card and had add two 120mm fans into my side panel and run the cooler at 100% just to OC it 100mhz on the core.

Now that's really funny. You are happy that you ditched your 8800 GTS for a 8600 GT because of "heat issues"? I also believe that a 7900 GT or X1900/X1950 XT would outperform a 8600 gt.

so i thought this card origanlly was supposed to compete with the 7600GT but now it seems as if its compairable to the 7900GS, but once DX10 games are more mainstreem, it will be even better than the 7900GS correct?
well i was thinkg about getting two 8600GTS, for $289.98 after MIR.
this would be a better deal than one 8800gts 640MB for $349.99 after MIR correct?

NOOOO!!!!

8800GTS is much much better than 8600GTS's in SLI.

The 8600GTS is about the equivalent of a 7900GS, though drivers have made it equal or better than the 7900GS.

Choggs has done a great job in assembling this thread, however I wouldn't rely on one benchmark to judge a card, also I agree with Maximum PC that benchmarks should be done using programs that you actually use the GPU for, so Doom 3, Quake 4, CoH, Supreme Commander etc. Not synthetic Benchmarks that can have code massively optimized for them, like 3DMark.

take this review/bench on for size, it looks to me that if i drop about $100 now on one, ill be getting about the same performance as a get now with my 7600gt's in SLi, and then in three months i can step up(evga) or i can get another 8600 (in three months or later), also, i spend $100 on the new 8600GTS and sell my 7600GT's, i could make back, 50 to 100+ dollars for the two of them. and for now i would be almost even money... i just need some people to push me over the edge to do it...

For a person on a budget then that is a good plan, in fact the one I am taking (though I got an 8600GTS instead of a 7900GT via RMA).

Umm $100 is the 8600GT, not GTS. the GTS is ~$170. Though you could volt mod it and overclock the heck out of it, results are not guaranteed. Plus two voltmoded SLI cards might be tough. So stick with the 8600GTS if you can afford it.

If you can afford an 8800GTS, that would be your best bet. Get a good card and get another in a few months / year for SLI. SLI isn't always perfect 90% in all games, and some times it will perform the same as or worse than the single card.
