Rumour control: Samsung to buy AMD?

'Utter destruction' of Intel imminent?

Posted at: 12:00am 23rd July 2007 By Ben Hardwidge

Okay, so this story is about as anecdotal as we get at Rumour Control. There may be some truth in it, but it might also turn out to be complete rubbish, so salt, pinch and so on. Anyway, the word, according to tech gossip rag The Inquirer, is that Samsung might be considering purchasing AMD.

Wild as this may seem, we’ve heard a lot of rumours about AMD potentially being up for grabs from sources in the industry, and a huge corporation such as Samsung potentially has the might to pull off such a feat. Plus, an anonymous reader called Pete, armed with ‘credible evidence,’ also wrote to the site. He said that, if this were to happen, it would mean the ‘complete and utter destruction of Intel.’ He also said that ‘it seems very likely to happen considering Samsungs aggressive fight for memory with Intel.’

While this all looks like speculation to us, it’s worth bearing in mind that The Inquirer got the story on AMD buying ATi well in advance, and that we dismissed it at the time, saying we’d eat our own graphics cards if it was true. Do you think AMD could be up for sale, and if Samsung was to buy AMD, what would this mean for Intel? Let us know your thoughts.

Who knows, really, what it'd mean? I was hoping IBM would buy AMD, though. ;(

Still seems stupid to me that AMD would buy ATi and then not have enough cash-monies to keep up with the Intel-AMD CPU race.

yeah i think they made a mistake in buying ati and not still being able to dump large amounts of money to make sure their stuff came out on time. But either way i think it couldnt hurt. samsung makes some good products so they might only help.

If AMD got bought out, Intel stocks would skyrocket.

qft.

although, all samsung product i've ever owned has never failed me. if samsung bought out AMD, i'd have a little more faith. but AMD note only has to play catchup tech wise, but stock/investment wise. no faith/no invesment and a DECENT not exemplirary product does not win the waaar
