My friend gave his X850XT PE, 16 pipes, heavily OC'd and it beat a 7600gt at teh time (my 7600gt which is OCd and voltmodded), to geek squad to troubleshoot. one of the ceramic caps blew off and i could not solder it as i have a .20 inch diameter iron! (LOL I STILL *ALMOST* got it but there was too much solder so i just desolder and clean it up ) they said before repairing it they would test it; so we waited, and I asked if i could see their test setup. they were reluctant, but i convinced them of my geekage and that i would be quiet not say a word just watch as i was interested in how they would troubleshoot it.

then i watched in horror as they brought out their test mobo. i didnt tell my friend (should have but i didnt know they would go through with it) what, you ask? read on

it was an OEM, nothing wrong with it, they hooked everything up, 3GHz netburst, 1gb ram, 500W PSU, but the slot...it COULDN't be a PCI-E slot, could it? they wouldn't do something stupid like that i said in my mind. well i was wrong.

what i was about to see was a scarring experience of my life

they started to put teh card in the slot. i realized suddenly when the pins didnt match up that all my suspicions, fears, and thoughts were sudddenly coming true in a nightmarish frenzy! IT WAS A ****ING AGP SLOT!!!!!!!!!!

they couldn't fit it in...and then the guy was like "hey this card isn't going in"
his boss said "nah just push in harder dont worry it wont break. those AGP locks are stiff

"no really it wont fit"

"ah lemme do it" *PUSH* *GRUNT* *CRACK*

i had to break the news to my friend

he got no refund on the premise that it was broken to begin with.

Heh... how stupid was the Geeksquad guy that he didn't check to see what programs were running before doing anything else... Coulda seen the screen cap software running LOLz...

I work in a small computer shop and the only time I "snoop" is when I'm backing up their data for them, to make sure I've got it all. (Less of a hassle since I found Unstoppable Copier...)

Even if all they need is to have something installed, I'll probably do a little extra checking anyways, check size of drive, free space etc... check AV status, amount of RAM / virtual memory... generally things to try and upsell them... Other than that, I'll usually stay away from their music / movies / pix unless they've mentioned them specifically. I've only copied data for myself from 1 customer's comp, after asking her if I could make a copy of some of her music and Naruto episodes...

Now, if I'm running a AV scan and see it scanning a file that sounds anything like pedo porn, I'll check it and call the cops if necessary...

this one time there was this store that would take peoples broken computers, fix them, wipe the HDD and sell them. one day i saw they were having a closing sale so i went in and found two laptops (2.2ghz amd, and 512 mb ram) that were exactly alike i picked on eup and asked the guy how much and he said $50 so i picked up the second one and said how about $75 for the two and maybe i'll get one working from the two? he said it was a deal and i bought them but when i got them up and running i noticed that they hadn't wiped the HDDs before selling them. there wasn't any sensitive info on them but there was PLENTY of pron luckily for the owner I didn't happen to know the previous owner but it was not professional in any way for him to sell those laptops with the previous owners data on it.

Freak, I don't want people to be stealing pictures of my friends and families.
you sign a waiver when you give it to them saying they can take your PC, steal your pr0n, and piss all over it if they so choose.
