PSU & Energy bill relations

hey, i work for a corporate company, and doing some research. I'm wondering a typical home has a typical computer with a psu of around 300-400 watts. Now how much will that raise the typical electric bill if left on all the time compared to on turned on when needed.

or even better how much more would you pay if you left the computer on 24/7 versus never having a computer on?

Depends on what you're doing. A 600w PSU will not run 600w during idle. You'll use more electricity if the computer is underload.

EDIT: Modern day PSU have higher efficiency and that can save some bucks per months.

Coporate offices pay power based on different calculations than home users. I believe home users just have to pay for real power while commercial users must pay for apparent power used.

PSU rating doesn't matter. You need to know power consumption or how much power your PSU actually uses. This is your system requirements plus PSU inefficencies (15-30%). The inefficencies is lost as heat because the PSU can never convery 100% of AC into DC.

For the cost calculation:
Basically, take PSU's power consumption then divide by 1000. This is your kilowatt-hour usage. Now muliple that by how many hours you leave your PC on during a month. Don't forget that idle and load consumption are very different and vary. Electrical companies charge $.08 to $.25 per kilowatt-hour.

power supply efficiency is dependent on brand and quality. Typically the highest efficiency of a supply is seen when it's loaded with 20%-80% of it's capacity. Even when off, in standby mode, power supplys can and will draw between 5-10 watts from the wall. A typical home users pc is in idle for a majority of the tasks people perform, browsing the web, watching a video, they aren't cpu intensive, so modern amd and intel computers with power throttling will keep the pc from drawing little more than idle power.

Example:
In a day... I use my PC at near 100% for 3hrs, idle for 3hrs, and medium load for 2 hrs. Let's say the power consumption rates are 400w, 100w, and 200w respectively. I have the same habit five times a week for four weeks. The power company is charge $.15 per kW-hr.

400/1000 = .4*3
100/1000 = .1*3
200/1000 = .2*2
So I use around 1.9kW-hrs a day.

1.9*5*4 = 38kW-Hr
So I use 38kW-hr a month.

38*$.15 = $5.70
So it costs about $5-6 to run my PC monthly.

yep. thats how you do it. my PC costs me ~$30 / month

thats 24/7 folding at 80% TDP for my CPU and 100% when i somehow use that much

here in WI electricity is dirt cheap 0.091332 per kWh

problem is i am estimating the efficiency from the rating. i cannot really test it

If you want to know the EXACT cost.... Buy a Watts-Up or Kill-A-Watt device and plug your power strip into it (so you can account for your monitor power as well). Leave it for billing cycle.

well i work for a utility company, and that utility is Electric. LOL

anyways i calculated if we only have the computers on for the amount of time we worked, using a normal home owner's rate, each person would only save about $15 dollars a month roughly including running the a/c to cool the room of computers.

so for a company with couple hundred employees each with their own computer, it amounts to several thousand dollars.

but i leave mine on 24/7 to fold.

+plus we generate the electricity, so we basically get ours for free.

i read an article some time ago about this. It said that a 750w psu with a computer that actually uses a lot of that. So basically a good gaming rig that is left on 24/7 can raise your elctricity bill between 30-50 bucks.
And ill vouch for that since my mom complains that her bill went up over a hundred since i been home and i leave my pc on 24/7 plus i leave lights on and stuff and im sure im not all of it lol.
