Bull. The article writer is a moron. It is common knowledge and basic PSU design. Where did the extra 300-400w of power go? A PSU only consumes whatever power is needed by the system plus some overhead (15-40% extra). That is a fact.

A big GPU will suck the most power. I'm running a E6600 folding rig 24hr/day with a lame GPU and it's pulling 2400w/day. With an 8800GTX running at full power, it would be 4 times that amount.

well the article was in a pc magazine weather its right or not i dont know but what i do know is my computer being on 24/7 has definately had a noticible impact atleast more then 15-20 dollars on my moms electric bill. Now im not willing to turn it off for a month and see how much it goes down we all know none of us could i love ocn and my computer way to much

Yeah, I've used the Kill-a-watt on several PC's and that article is a load of bull. The W rating is MAXIMUM draw not continuous. That would be ludicrous to design a PSU that way.

to defend my self not the article i never said that it would use the 750w continuously that is rediculous. All i said was a computer that could use alot of that can hurt you bill at the end of the month. Now as i said my computer hurts my electric bill i dont how much but i also fold all day so that probably helps. Now for the articles defense i dont remember if it said if the computer was under load or not.

The writer at PC Magazine needs to get a degree in Electrical Engineer or Physics then. Conservation of energy!

If you are claim an $15 increase in your bill....

Assume you are paying $.15 per kW-hr (the cost is the biggest variable actually):
$15/$.15 = 100kW-hr

You are running 24/7 for month:
24*30= 720hr

That means your PC is using on average:
100/720 = .1389kw

That means your PSU woud be using 139w and your system would be using about 110-100w on average. Not all that much... the same as 120w light bulb.

lol i claim a $15 dollar increase in electric bill because
1) our rate is about $.07 / kilowatt hr

and the typical comptuers most people have are like HP / dell / compaq / gateway. and these computers come with a psu around 300-400.

but when idleing they consume only what is needed. and since most of the computers here i think like to go on stand by mode it wants to draw little energy, and we also use lcd monitors that use i think 15 watts or less.
