What is going to happen in the HL universe? - Page 2

I haven't personally played the new episodes of half life. But that is pretty lame IMO.

What is it like $20 an episode? Seems to me they are really milking it, i don't want to have to pay $20 two or three times just to find out how a game ends... Should be a little cheaper since it's basically a continuation of the story with a little shinier graphics.

But i will agree that the half life story is excellent, my memory is a little hazy on it, and i think it is still a little confusing, but it is very good. One of the best IMO.

a new game cost aprox $60...

3 episodes is aprox one game. An episode is aprox $20 lets do the math
$20 + $20 + $20 = $60

Who ever said Tomb raider had a story, not to mention a good one?

I was saying that HL had a great story, and set up a great universe, but where will it go now? there are loads of secrets and hints, i was just wondering what people thought. Who is Gman, will there ever be a decent explaination? Im hoping there is more to it then meets the eye, more than just a simple fight between rebels and the combine.

There is a secret scene you can see somewhere of Gman meeting one of the rebel leaders. Whose side is he on?

Yes, it is a good idea to dole out episodes...assuming that that means we get content more frequently. Since it is taking SOOOOOO long to crank out each episode, it gets a little frustrating.

No...games that claim to be telling a story do have a conclusion. The story arc has to have an ending, or the player is shorted. Tomb Raider does not have a story arc; it is a franchise, but every game is a self-contained unit. The first set of Half-Life games were also self-contained units. The HL2 episodes are not: They are telling a story, and the episodes are chapters in that story. It must reach a conslusion...even if that conclusion leaves lots of open questions as a setup for Half-Life 3.

Why would it get frustrating?

HL2 Didn't come out until YEARS after HL1

These episodes are a god send in the fact that we get to play more HL sooner

And the story line is quite immense i do agree. The episodes are an awesome idea in my opinion. Obviously there will be people that disagree

HL2 was a whole separate game...we've been conditioned to expect a new game to take a couple of years. Thus the expansion packs that come out after a year or so, to try and milk a successful product a little more without going through a complete dev cycle.

But episodic content is supposed to be MUCH more rapid that a year at a time. The promise is a few months per episode. The new Sam and Max games are a perfect example: short and sweet, and a new one was released every two to three months. Now that's an aggressive window for a game like HL2 episodes, I agree; but six or seven months seems more aligned with what "episodic" should be to me.

i wasnt saying thats what you thought, i was directing my explanation to members who replied to you.

we do not know whose side gman is on, all we know is that gman has control over gordon in the way that he can wake him up from cyberspace and bring him back to earth and replace him into a time warp whenever he likes. The fact that gman is choosing to put gordon on earth at a time when the human race is at a critical downfall would suggest he is on the rebels side. But many sources say that the times you see gman meeting certain characters in the distance (there are about 5 in hl2) is when he is putting gordon up for the highest bidder, and many people are interested in his services. This is quite interesting and the fact that i could be completely wrong in my assumptions makes the mystery so much more entertaining

the last 2 episodes are said to reveal answers to so many of the mysteries we have come across in HL2 and HL2:E1

This approach actually bugged the heck out of me in HL2, actually. I played through the whole game and never saw the G-Man anywhere. Then I read about how he's off in the distance, meaning to see him you had to either a) already know he was there because of a spoiler, or b) be much more meticulously observant of things that are not part of the immediate surroundings than I think most people generally are. This is not the way to tell a story. For me, the G-Man was an interesting enigma in HL1 because he was overtly there. But in HL2, he wasn't part of the story at all; he was just part of the intro and outtro.

well thats exactly what makes HL2 such an involving story. Gman isnt vital to the story that you are playing through in HL2 and EP1 because you are never told why you were woken up, why you had been missing for so long before hand, and why gman was there to wake you up and take you back at the end of HL2. However he is a constant in the story of half life and his story becomes more important in EP2 and 3. There is an entire website speculating over the Half Life story here but the very essence of the game is the mystery surrounding Gordon. He never speaks, he doesnt even appear in the game (apart from you in his FPS view). However the final episodes of the game reveal alot of the mysteries as we have been told in previews.

As for seeing gman in HL2, i tended to be aware of surroundings a great deal because the attention to detail was one of the things that mezmerized me most.
