Well, I just don't subscribe to all the "Valve are storytelling gods" hype. There's no way you will ever convince me that, way back in HL1, they were creating some giant mythical backstory on Gordon designed to keep players engaged in a mystery for the next ten years. And you especially won't convince me that the lack of hearing or seeing him is part of that mystery...not when 9 out of 10 FPS games ever made employ the exact same game design technique. And that's exactly what this specific point is: a game design technique. Nothing more, nothing less.

In fact, I distinctly recall an interview from years ago about HL1 where they explicitly stated that the lack of cut scenes was simply to keep them from taking the player out of the game. (Unfortunately what I'm recalling was a TV show, so I can't cite a source as proof.)

I agree with vulcan. I've read an interview with Valve where they pretty much said the same thing. They don't like cutscenes because they feel they kill the immersiveness and pull you out of the "main-character-is-you" scenario.

Play Half-Life then Blue Shift then Opposing Force.

I dont know why everyone is acting so shocked that you have Episode 1/2/3 because they did the same thing with Half-Life except they called them different packages. You had Half-life followed by Opposing Force and then Blue Shift...the only difference is that these games just gave you different "Angles" on the storyline instead of any kind of closure.

And I seriously doubt the Gman is some kind of rebel leader trying to liberate the universe from the combine, sounds like a bad comic book to me.

Also I don't much like the Combine to begin with, Half-Life1 kicked ass because theres TONS of monsters and additions.

-New guns
-New allies
-New enemy's
-New environments

With Half-Life 2 there was NOTHING added whatsoever, in fact they removed many things like the Snarks, Gluon gun, and Tau Cannon.

Half-Life2 had gimped gameplay, it was nothing like the E3 trailers...everything was way too scripted and I'm sorry, I'm not that impressed with the "Physics" either. The main reason being that I've seen Combine knock through extremely heavy crates and boxes as if they were made out of Tissue Paper...I see nothing "Awesome" about the Source Engine given its age.

Half-Life2 has only 2 pistols, a SMG and a Shotgun and some bizarre *!@#('ed up crossbow that shoots out molten rods for some ungodly reason and then they have the awesome rocket launcher.

Not to mention the "Pheropods" that were SOOO useful because everytime you'd summon Antlions they had the I.Q. of a tin can and just got annihiliated.

The Combine showed no signs of intelligence or independent thinking. The entire single player experience was scripted like a poorly directed Sci-Fi movie.

Thus far I am nowhere near impressed with Half-Life 2 at all, the gameplay is mediocre given the amount of time I waited for it and I'm just sorely disappointed overall.

In terms of multiplayer I had 100 times more fun with Half-Life1 given all the community mods and projects, now we just have these horrible mods like insurgency and CS:S its all a joke. Theres no equivalent like Front Line Forces or Firearms, even something like SvenCoop is nonexistant.

Well, I doubt this argument is going to end with you saying "You're right and I'm wrong...wow, Half-Life is a better game than I thought!" so I'm not gonna bother trying to disprove anything you said.

But I've liked Half-Life's storyline, and how you can figure out a fair amount of it on your own. It's more than just the plot itself though...I really like the characters; they're more than just the macho, "you don't know what war is" stereotype, the "I'll get it done with one arm behind my back!" stereotype, and the "You can't do this! It's far too risky!" stereotype. Some characters get along, some don't. Some characters are family members, some are just friends. Combine that with what I've seen to be THE best facial animation seen in a video game, expert dialogue writing, and it really results in a lot of very believable characters.
