Xp reinstall problems

Thread Starter
Ok I started the day out by loading all my drivers on to my flash drive and was planning on clean installing Xp. I get into the windows setup on the cd and it tells me that it can't find a previous windows and tells me to insert a Xp (full version) cd. I don't have one of those cds and I just want to get a new install on this dam computer. Then to make things worse it wouldnt boot into windows after trying this for about 20 boots. Anything I should know or am doing wrong?

I know this is silly but i need to know, you havnt actually formatted the drive yet have you?
cause obviously that deletes all the data and hence you cant access windows. So im assuming you have a windows repair disc like the OEM company's give you? (from HP or Acer etc)

If you didnt format, was windows working ok? Did you then turn the PC off, then put your CD in, boot up and now it isnt working? If thats the case i think the only thing you could do is get a hold of a full version of windows, format the drive and install fresh. As long as you have your own cd key for windows you could just borrow a friends copy but use your key.

If it is an upgrade disk, you will need a previous version of windows on a CD to install.

Begin the windows install as if it was the full version, during the install you will be prompted for a previous operating system, at his point put your old operating system CD in the drive and browse to the I386 folder (for Windows NT or 2000), WIN9X folder (for Windows ME), or WIN98 folder (for Windows 98). Click ok, the windows upgrade will confirm this is a full version and continue with the upgrade (after you replace the upgrade CD).

Well if you haven't formatted yet that may be why its asking for a full disc to perform a repair.
If you format your drive will you have a friend or something who could lend you a windows disc if yours doesn't work? As long as you have all the files you wanted I'd format the drive THEN try your current disc, and if the disc still wont work, borrow a friends disc.

And if you are 100% sure you have the full version and not a fix disc then maybe ring Microsoft and ask for a replacement disc because obviously it isn't getting detected as a full install disc.

Hope this helps.

Try to find a friend that has a old 98 or winme disk. Might even be able to call ms and tell them your computer crashed and you no longer have your old 98 or winme disk and ask them to give you a full ver cdkey or send you a copy.

You could try downloading it? It's not like your stealing or something cause you have the cd keys.
