1 C above room ambient. And everyone says this case has a crappy cooling setup...and I haven't even filled all the fan spots yet. Oh, and i measure temps with my own temp probes, one at the bottom, middle, and top. Top is 1 C above ambient.

right now it only has a 120mm intake, 92mm exhaust, 80mm exhaust, and that's it. Well, my PSU has two fans that seem to push out a heck of alot of air. And the top and one side is completly meshed. I'm gonna see if I can get ahold of another meshed side so the case would be completly meshed. The case was cheap too, so if I had to I'd buy another one for the meshed side, and use the non-mesh case to build a pc for someone else.

It's got room for 2 more 120mm fans as well, one on the mesh side and one front.

Well, it's either a bad chip or too much thermal grease, or not enough, or you have the voltage set really high, or the MB is setting it to high if it's on auto.

Higher frequencies don't really raise the temperature that much. Upping the voltage is what's going to make a big difference.

If I remember right, the E4300 has thermal paste between the die and the IHS, while the E6x00 series are soldered on. That is where the E4x00 series runs into heat issues. If you have a screw-down cooler, that will help temps, as it will push the IHS down onto the die more.

As bdattilo suggested, maybe you can try to tighten the screws on your Zalman a bit more. If you've tried that already, maybe you can try to remove the IHS instead.

OT: I just got my e4400 running. It's at stock ATM and is on stock cooling. When I looked at my temps, they were around 31C idle. I looked in the case and saw that the fan was not spinning on the stock HS! So I moved some wires and the fan started spinning again. It was like that for about 30 minutes. Is 31C on a passive Intel stock cooler good? (with stock thermal paste/pad?)

I feel almost as though I have been ripped off in a way. My e4300 BARELY stays within Intels thermal limits at all stock system settings, with an aftermarket cooler! Yeah, maybe they do overclock OK, but this thing would need water to get near 3GHz. I have tried everything other than lapping or IHS removal, so please no suggestions. The only reason I had opted for this chip in the first place was because it was supposed to be a cheap overclocker, which this definetly is not. With water cooling (which this one needs and will never get), plus the $140 cdn for the chip, I'd be in at $275-$300ish, which could have got me a cooler running e6600 or something at the time and aftermarket air cooling. Regrets, regrets. Guess I can still look forward to a quad in my future, whether it be Intel or AMD.
Mine runs 38C idle 54C load @ 3.12ghz...
