Studying to OC. Question.

I'm on this website icrontic.com reading about overclocking an AMD, and as I'm reading I don't understand alot of this stuff, but I'll keep going. I will go back and read it a few times to get it 100%. He's explaining how he is finding his max stable cpu clock. I understand what he's doing, makes sense. He then lowers his LTD multiplier from x4 to x3, because he said it would be too high.

"Now that the HTT bus speed has increased even more, it would be a good time to reduce the HTT multiplier. The HTT bus speed would now be 1840MHz if we kept the LDT multiplier at 4x, which I would consider too high. At this point, I'm going to decrease it one step downwards."


Here is the data if you don't want to visit the website.

First increase
REF: 215MHz
MEM CLK: 143MHz (2/3)
CPU CLK: 1720MHz (8x)
HTT BUS: 1720MHz (4x)
LOAD TEMP: 44'C
VCORE: DEFAULT
CPU GAIN: 7.5%
15 min P95/OCCT?: PASS

He lowers it to 3x from 4x

Second increase
REF: 230MHz
MEM CLK: 153MHz (2/3)
CPU CLK: 1840MHz (8x)
HTT BUS: 1380MHz (3x)
LOAD TEMP: 45'C
VCORE: DEFAULT
CPU GAIN: 15%
15 min P95/OCCT?: PASS

How does he decide it's too high? Is there a ratio or some way of figuring when it's too high?

What exaclty is LDT Multiplier?

It shouldn't be over 1100mhz MAX, otherwise you'll suffer instability...

EDIT: To add, his calculations are wrong. With the first increase it would be at 860mhz, and the second 690mhz...

1100 OR 2100, because it's 1600 stock, so... that doesnt make sense to me.

Which calculations? Can you post his and then what it should be?

I'm lost, sorry.

Stay under 1000 mhz for stability thats all there is too it.

Can someone tell me how prosser got 860 mhz and 690 mhz. I don't know how.

Edit: Okay I got 860 & 690
215*4 = 860
230*3 = 690

On the website he offers this equation(?)
HTT Bus = Reference Clock * LDT Multiplier * 2
HTT Bus = 215MHz * 4 * 2
HTT Bus = 1720MHz


He inserts a *2 when there shouldn't be one.

I'm assuming I am correct?

HTT freq = FSB freq * HTT multi

that should answer your question.

Correct..the 'base clock' for DDR is multiplied by 2x to get the actual or effective, speed. Same for AMD's on calc'ing the FSB..base clock x2 = actual FSB.

The HTT is the speed between the NB/SB..so ideally you want to run your FSB,HTT and RAM speeds all relatively close together to minimize bottleneck.
