well im sorry i dont know hopefully someone else will chime in with the right answer the only thing i can suggest is to comb your bios options and see if there is something in there that might be affecting your settings

The problem you have is one is similar to the one I have experienced with my DFI board. It all boils down to the fact that SATA 5 and 6 are on the silicon image raid controller, which probably has an option like mine to run in sata mode without raid. I tried booting mine off of the silicon image chip, and it didn't turn out too well to say the least. On your board SATA 1-4 are on the ULI 1575 southbridge chip, and I guess that's why grub don't like your setup with that fourth drive, because neither my debian install nor windows liked being booted off that silicon image chip. If you can, try setting the silicon image chip to sata mode only and using it for your optical drive, leaving the first four sata ports for the hard drives. Other than that, I don't know what you could do other than get an ide optical drive.

Edit: Looking at the manual for your board, in bios, under integrated peripherals, then under onboard PCI device(not onchip), try setting onboard SATA controller to enabled, SATA option rom to disabled, and RAID mode to disabled. That might make the optical drive work with sata 5-6.

i emailed a friend of mine and told him my problem and this is what he replied to me. do you guys think this might work?

A great deal of current BIOS do not register anything connected by SATA except hard drives. Chances are your computer detects the hard drive fine, it is probably just altering the order GRUB sees the drive. Install the Hard drive, again, then in another optical drive, like and IDE, boot from an Ubuntu 7.0.4 alternate disc, and use the repair option, it will automatically reinstall GRUB, setting up to take the new drive into account, andd allowing you machine to choose between Windows or Linux at boot (just like you had before).
so i think what roadrage150 suggested would be the easer one to try first then i think i will try this.
