Need help with upgrade

Thread Starter
My budget is $200 shipped and taxed to CA.
Mobo needs to support my current P4 as well as C2D's and quad's
Case needs to fit a Tuniq Tower

With that being said, I have put together

http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16811119077
http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16813131142
http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16817182010

but it's already at $230 w/o shipping or tax. So I'm going to have to go with cheaper parts unless you REALLY think this is the bare minimum I should be getting.

So can you put together a good upgrade build for me that does not exceed 200 shipped/taxed?

Also please make sure everything will be compatible with everything else.

I was assuming you were on more of a budget.... Now that I see your list, I can say that the ASUS board is a very good choice. I've used one myself with an E4300. I got it up to 3.2GHz with 1.35v vcore! If you are going for that 650i board, keep in mind that the ASUS is picky with RAM. I used G.Skill and had zero problems, although I did have to go into the bios and manually set timings.

Does anyone know if it will work with my Corsair then?

And where can I save money with this build? Should I just use the shipping box as a case until I have the money for a case? Or should I get a slightly cheaper mobo? And how's the PSU?

I wouldnt go cheap on the motherboard if you can help it. Here is the link to the ASUS forum on this board. There should be some info on the memory for you. I know part of the problem was the voltage on the DDR2 6400 memory since a lot of them run above 1.8v (which yours run at). The case is a popular one on the forums. Just look at some of the build logs, many of them are centurion cases. As for the power supply, dont know. I've always used Antec PSUs so I cant give any advice on others. I would just read reviews at newegg.

I dont think you can really save money on this build without going to a cheap motherboard, which you obviously dont want!

edit: If you want to use the box as a case, thats up to you. Just make sure it is not accident prone and that the board is well grounded at all times. You might be tempted to swap parts and touch electrostatic sensitive components. Just remember to always ground and to turn off the PSU before removing/handling components.

No, Rosewill does not make good PSUs.

It usually costs at least $100 for a quality PSU. Trust me, you don't want to have problems with your PSU because your whole system depends on it. What CPU and video card will you have? That sort of thing will determine how much power you need. I'm trying to find a good PSU for myself right now as well, but I don't know exactly what to get. But I definitely know to avoid something like Rosewill.

I'm sure I heard some good stuff about Rosewill making good budget PSU's on this site. Plus the reviews say they're good. Well if there is something better please do tell me but I am not paying $100 for one. I know you can get a very decent 'budget' PSU for $55-65, I've seen people link to them, just can't find them now.

I am planning to run my current system on the PSU, but eventually I will upgrade to a C2D or quad, and 8800gts or gtx.

Also how's this motherboard? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128017
