I think something is fried PLEASE HELP

post #1 of 8
Thread Starter
Hello, I am a new member here. After reading a few posts and getting a few decent links to tutorials, I figured i was ready to give overclocking a shot. Boy was I wrong, I haven't the slightest clue as to what happened to my pc. I am hoping someone knows what, if anything is fried or not.

So after spending a night googling, i came across:

http://www.overclock.net/intel-gener...e-how-2-a.html

In that thread there were a few links given for newbies to follow. So i picked the one that closely resembled my pc and gave it a shot. The one i started to follow is:

http://gear.ign.com/articles/747/747671p2.html

Everything was fine till i got to step 3 at the bottom of the page, they asked to up the system voltage system. Till Step 3 i followed word by word.

So like the guide recommended in step 3, i changed my cpu voltage to CPU Core: 1.45V, as soon as i did, there was a small thud type noise that came from the case. It wasn't loud and i was able to change the other settings and even save and exit so i didn't think much of it. Till i had to reboot for the next step. After completing step 3 and rebooting, the pc died on me. Lights on the motherboard work fine, my 8800gtx seems to be running fine but i get a blank screen on the pc and the option to hard reboot are unavailable.

Anyone have any idea what could be wrong? What could be my next step?

System Specs:

CPU = Intel Core 2 Duo E6700
Motherboard = EVGA nForce 680i SLI NVIDIA Socket 775 ATX Motherboard (New A1 Version)
Video Card = EVGA 8800 GTX
Harddrive = 74GB 10K RPM as master, total 1.3TB
Ram = Crosair Dominator PC2-6400 - 4 x 1GB
Case = Thermaltake Black Kandalf LCS
OS = Windows Vista Ultimate

Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Try clearing your CMOS, depending on your mobo there should be a jumper pin that you need to move somewhere. Check out the manufacturers site for more info.

Hope it helps.

Yes CMOS issue... Remove the CMOS battery for a good couple of hours (don't use anything metal to remove it) and unplug the PSU from the wall... don't worry everything should be fine... hope this helps that butterfly heeling in ur stomach...

TY so much for your help!, I checked the book on CMOS and how to reset it, and well good news is I GOT MY PC RUNNING AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!! THANK YOU!

I think i'll stay away from overclocking for a bit, maybe give it another try once i have done a bit more reading on this topic.

Thanks again guys!

welcome to the forums, you hav a nice rig and overclocking it shudn't hurt it too much...just watch your temps and be careful as to what your doing... I remember another member who FRIED an e6600 by using the stock Kandalf LCS, and maxxing all his voltages... NOT smart... first off the stock cooling system in those cases is not meant for extreme overclocking, its way better then the stock intel heatsink, and even better then most mid range air coolers, but its meant fro single core procs, so watch your temps...

Yea i think i am going to upgrade my cpu waterblock before i do anymore overclocking. The stock LCS i have is only being used to cool the cpu, and nothing else. The pump is 500L/H, I'm going to guess thats more then enough to cool the cpu? especially with the upgraded cpu cooling block.

Any suggestions on good cpu cooling blocks will be welcomed.

I suggest the D-Tek FuZion very good water block, meant for multi core processors, and ready to handle quads if u evr decide to upgrade, cools mine nicely, nicely lapped base, and requires a little effort to clean up before placing in the loop but a very solid wb...
