8800 GTS: Should I overclock?

Thread Starter
I have the 320mb Extreme edition variant of this card. I haven't ever tried to overclock it and i just got the nTune software. My idle temp is about 64-66 degrees. I know this is on the high side but I live in India where the avg room temp is about 32-36 degrees and goes up to 42 in the summer.

Overclocking is gonna make it hotter so should I even consider it? Blowing this card is not an option since I'm not going to be able to get a new one for a good long time.

Also, I just saw that some one got their clocks to 630/2000 at 63 degrees. Damned if i know how he managed that.

Anyway......advice?

First, uninstall nTune since it has been known to cause strange issues. Download ATITool instead to overclock.

Next, the card is "safe" up to 110C. Over 110C, it will throttle down automatically. At 130C, it will auto-shutdown. For every day use, under 90-100C is fine.
Once again...

Go for it man, that's what it's there for! If you are concerned about temps, go look at Zalman's 700vf or 900vf. I have the 900vf on my 6800gt and it's GREAT for keeping temps really cool!

The 900vf doesn't work with the 8800 series.

AFAIK, the only aftermarket so far for the 8800 series is the HR-03 plus.

Anyway, with those kind of temps, I really wouldn't overclock to be honest. The xxx edition already is overclocked slightly, so that should be good. Overclock once you start to get gfx lag in games.

That doesn't work on an 8800.
edit: oops lol I got beaten to it

IF you can get it to about 640/2000 you can give the GTX a run for its money.

Games run pretty smoothly right now but then again I'm running them at 1024x768 cuz of my old crt. But I'm going want to overclock it sooner or later so I guess I'll worry about it then.

Even if those coolers mentioned did work with this card I wouldn't ever find them in India.

Its hard when you have high ambiant temps. If you don't need it, don't do it now.
