RAID 0 and VISTA

Thread Starter
My raid 0 on XP didn'y work wonders for me, i think i have done it incorrectly, If i switch to vista will it be easier to configure? Or ill still be needing a floppy drive? ( i dont have a floppry drive ) currently on benchmarks my Raid drives are just 10 percent faster than my normal drives i must have made something wrong. Should i go vista? my 1 gb is stopping me i have read that if you have 1 gb of ram then its not worth to go vista. How much performance loss should i expect from vista?

The performance loss in Vista is more around DX10, your fine with 1GB of ram although get another 1GB if you can afford it.

As for RAID in XP it's quite simple (although tedious).

1: Enable RAID Controller and corresponding SATA Ports in Bios
2: Go into the RAID Config Utility (via F10 usually) and create the array with striping and 128k stripe size. Save and exit.
3: Put in XP CD, and boot off of it, during the start of the setup Press F6 to install RAID drviers. Press S when asked to install each driver (2 are required).
4: Press Enter and your done.

RAID in Vista is even easier.

1: Enable RAID Controller and corresponding SATA Ports in Bios
2: Go into the RAID Config Utility (via F10 usually) and create the array with striping and 128k stripe size. Save and exit.

That's it.

NOTE: Don't forget to remove the speed limiting jumper on each hard disk if they have one.

1) You don't NEED another gig of ram for Vista, but I STRONGLY recommend another gig. (between my video card sharing 750 MB and Vista Idling at 800 MB, you really would want more that 1 gig total)(Mine idles high b/c i give everything extra ram b/c i have 4 gig)

2)You will not need the RAID drivers on floppy for Vista, I loaded mine off of my usb stick (cd's are fine as well)

3) Your video card will do fine to run Aero (it is so pretty! )

4) Benchmarks indicate ~5FPS loss on games (not really a big deal)

5) Only 10% increase with Raid 0??? What stripe size did your use? I am using 64K and many people also use 32K and 128K. It dramatically cut down on boot-up times. In general though, the increased read/write speed doesn't make a difference.

Summary: GET VISTA, go RAID 0, and get at least a gig of RAM!

Good question, depends if you can do RAID on the standard ports or not. Read the manual and see if it's supported via the normal ports, if so test performance between them. I know it's a slow process, but once you know which one performs the best your set. Some onboard controllers are literally pants. (silicon is one of them)
