12V Rails ... One Big One or many small ones?

Thread Starter
I need a new psu for my gaming rig. I currently use a TT550 which although is ATI Crossfire certified, It is only rated at 550 watts and I dont believe that spec myself.

The two Sapphire X1950Pros I use both have oversized voltage regulator assemblies and suck current big time.

The big question I have is 12v rails and current-delivering ability. I see lots of PSUs have multiple 12v rails these days. Then I saw the PC cooling PSUs only use a single rail at very high amp ratings. Combined with their low noise filtering, this makes a lot of sense to me.

What do you all think about it? hype or good engineering?

1 huge rail is infinitely better than multiple little ones.

It is great engineering.

Keep in mind that not all PSUs that say they're multi-rail actually are. Like mine for instance has only one 12V rail while it's specs say 3.

That is one nice PSU. They are possibly the best PSU manufacturers on the market

Yeah It seams that the industry is moving back to single powerful rails over the multi rail engineering that has been about recently.

I concur with the consensus opinion: High amperage ratings from a single 12V rail.

By the way, Toadicus, I've got the black version of that PSU. Superb piece of kit. It's in my gaming rig now (which is just awaiting a motherboard in RMA), but I've used it for some customer rig testing.
