$1100 Intel C2D rig

post #1 of 11

Finally ordered all the pieces to my new baby. The only thing I'm keeping from my old computer is a case that I got last Christmas. It has a massive 250mm fan on the side, a 120mm intake fan on the front, and a 120mm slot on the back for an optional exhaust fan.

First of all, here is the ancient computer I am replacing:

AMD Athlon 2000+
1GB Crucial DDR-333 RAM
BFG GeForce 6600 OC 256MB
Antec Smartpower 400W
Abit KD7 motherboard
Sound Blaster Live
Western Digital ATA100 30GB (primary)
Western Digital ATA100 80GB (secondary)
DVD-ROM / CDRW (generic brand)
Windows 2000 Professional

And here is what I've ordered:

Intel E6750 C2D (2.66GHz) - $203 (mWave)
4x1GB OCZ Platium Rev 2 DDR2-800 - $159 (Fry's)
eVGA GeForce 8800GTS SC 320MB - $292 (mWave)
Corsair 520HX PSU - $95 (ZipZoomFly)
Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R Motherboard - $132 (mWave)
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 500GB - $99 (Circuit City)
Samsung SH-182M DVD-RW - $35 (Amazon)
Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit OEM - $95 (ZipZoomFly)

Subtotal = $1110
Circuit City Gift Card = -$75
Amazon Gift Certificate = -$25

Total = $1010

So far, the only things to arrive are the RAM and Hard Drive (which I picked up at the local Circuit City). I haven't put together a computer in about, uh, 4 years? I've always built my own, but waited a wee bit too long in replacing my existing rig. It's going to be especially interesting with 64-bit Vista.

Oh didn't know about the bug... I'll have to cross my fingers on hoping that gets fixed soon!

As for my monitor, it's a 19" Samsung 955DF CRT. I seriously considered replacing it, but decided to hold for now. I'm running it at 1280x1024, which seems to be well within the range of the 320MB cards. I may eventually upgrade to a larger display, but I'll probably put that off until my next build (2 years or so). If I do replace the CRT, it will probably be an LCD in the 19-22" range. I'm guessing that if I go up to a 24" (or perhaps even 22"), the higher resolutions will challenge my card's video memory.

Yeah, I'm really excited about the PSU. I've read so many sparkling reviews on silentpc & jonnyguru, as well as reports of it handling surprisingly heavy loads for a 520W PSU. And I'm SO looking forward to going modular... that was one of the main selling points for me.

It's been good to me. I bought it ~6 years ago to replace my generic PSU that got fried by a power surge (which also fried my MSI mobo & AMD 1200+). I thought about going with another Antec... but none of their models screamed "buy me" like the Corsair. I also considered a few models from Seasonic, Ultra, and OCZ.
