XM/Sirius Propose New à la Carte Plans

New pricing structure allows customers to pick only the stations they want

The merger between XM and Sirius is far from a done deal but the two companies announced proposed price cuts and new plans for post merger services. An XM/Sirius FCC filing (PDF) reveals the company has a new pricing structure with new packages starting at $6.99 and going up to $16.99 per month.

This programming would be a la carte and offer subscribers more service options. At $6.99 per month, customers could choose 50 channels and add additional channels for $.25 per month. Under the $6.99 package, the subscriber would have to choose all 50 channels from either XM or Sirius. The company does not allow mixing and matching between both services with the $6.99 package. This represents a 46% decrease in the price of the current lowest cost subscription rate from either provider.

Another a la carte option would allow subscribers 100 channels and give the option to pick from the best programming of both XM and Sirius for $14.99 per month. Other new service packages include two family friendly packs that block adult themed programs like Howard Stern and Playboy.

Customers would also be able to get all programming from both XM and Sirius on their current XM or Sirius hardware post merger for $16.99 per month. The proposed a la carte programming would be available within one year of the merger.

I love satellite radio and this could make it that much better. Sirius has so many stations that I dont see how any one person could ever (or would ever) listen to them all. It makes sense to do it a la carte. Now if only the cable stations would do something like this...

I can't speak for Sirius as I'm an XM sub and have been for almost 4 years, but yeah XM has a channel called "Liquid Metal" that is as you have described lol. I gotta say Satellite radio is definately one of the top inventions of the last 10years or so. I have 3 active subs on my subscription so I'm paying 26.97/mo total and its worth every penny!

"Hard Attack" on sirius would be your bread and butter.

You'd probably like "Octane" as well.

I love my satellite radio and will probably look into doing the ala carte thing because I only listen to 10 or so stations.
