AMD Athlon 64 x2 4200+ vs. AMD Athlon 64 4000+

Thread Starter
well... i have the 4000+ currently... running 32 bit win xp... i mainly play CS:Source... how much of a performance increase can i expect from upgrading to a x2 4200+... since its only $83.99 at the moment... Im running an x1900gt and 2 Gigs of ram.. my fps is way to jumpy for my tastes... and i think im getting a bit of a bottleneck from my CPU

What speeds do you have that CPU running on right now?

You probably get a little bit of extra performance because of the dual core, but not heaps. The game itself doesn't utilize dual core, so the only advantage in that sense is the fact that some other background stuff is delegated to the other core.

Let's assume you get 2.8 GHz out of either chip.... in that case I'd say you don't get a whole lot of performance increase.

About the FSB jumpiness... is it random, or in certain (graphically complex) situations? You might want to check what's running in the background and disable some junk.

Plus, a soundcard will relieve a good chunk of pressure from the CPU... (even a relatively inexpensive one will do...)

That's stock yes... but I assume you're gonna overclock that chip.. that's why I mentioned 2.8GHz.

Did you overclock that 4000+??

At stock, I do NOT expect any improvement in your situation. Again, the game itself doesn't use multi cores...

Are you sure it's the CPU holding you back?

Can you monitor the CPU usage during gaming?

I don't know how much budget you have available, but I would seriously think about jumping to another platform (socket AM2 or Intel).

For about $230, you get an AMD 3600+ Brisbane, a Biostar tForce 550, and 2GB of Corsair DDR2 675. That combination should overclock pretty easily to 3.0GHz or even more (with some luck). Given that you probably do get some money for your old parts, it might be something to think about.

i would think it has to be because no matter what video setting i use Ultra high settings or lowest possible i get roughly the exact same FPS and firefights jumps around to drastically which i would expect but not when i get 0 performance increase with lowest settings vs Highest....

What is the FPS you're getting? It would be very odd that it is exactly the same at whatever setting. I mean, the lowest possible is usually so crappy that any half decent rig will not have ANY bottleneck...
