Agp card on it's way out

Thread Starter
Hey guys, my first post here, been lurking for a bit.

My 9600XT is on it's way out (aritifacts in video/games/and during boot) the thing lasted a solid 4 years I believe, so I'm not upset, some of the best money I ever spent. However now I'm faced with a dilemma.

I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for a good AGP card (8x) that would get me through a year, I'd like to be able to run some of the newer games (my 9600 could handle CoH, Graw2, and all the rest jsut fine on low/med settings). That and I'd like to have something with Sm3.0, as I'd like to finally be able to play some R6: Vegas (been waiting for a while).

I graduate University in a year, so I plan on replacing the system after that, but I need something until then...

I read the sticky on bottlenecks, and searched and read what I could, however I do have a rather old system.

CPU: XP2500-M @2.2Ghz (200 x 11.0)
Mobo: Asus A7n8x-X
1Gig PC3200 DDR (Corsair Value)
500Watt PSu (Future Power :-\\ ) w/25A on the +12v

I'm trying not to spend over 150-160 as I don't think it's really worth it for a year, besides I'd imagine anything that high price wise would bottleneck on my system.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Well, you COULD get an X1950 PRO... But for about $170: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...2E16814102071R

Going by your current specs, I I would max out the graphics for that PC at an X1650PRO. You can get it for about $80 here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814161053

Don't get the one with the more MHz... It just means they overclocked at the factory. WE do that free at home.

Yea that's the card I was eyeing, but then I figured it'd be going a bit overboard. I could be nice and give it to my brother after I make the move to pci-e, but I don't think his systems looking any better then mine.

Awesome, thanks. I guess that begs one question though. Since I already have all the latest cat drivers installed and all that, will this new card require me to re-isntall them, or will what's there be sufficient.

sherlok: That card seems to be having a lot of problems...
Might I recommend the HIS HighTech X1650Pro Graphics Card with 512MB of GDDR2 for $110.

It comes with a better cooler and more ram.

The X1950GT is decent for $120 after MIR. But it requires a good amount of power to run. (your PSU may not be enough)

That said, a 7600GT for $110 is enough.

If you want to spend less, you can get a $70 6800XT or an X1650Pro for about the same.

guess I have a few links to sift through, yea Ninja_Boy I saw the reviews on that one card. Atleast I have some idea now so I can shop around.

Only problem with those rebates is that they expire in less then a week, which is cutting it a bit close for my taste, but like I said, I'll shop around.

Thanks for everything everyone.

Edit:

So I narrowed it down to these 2 cards:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102057
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814150233

It's a 1650Pro and a 7600Gt both have GDDR3 memory. I think I'm gonna splurge a bit and get the 7600GT, the 1650 seems to be a nice card for the money, but for $20 more then 7600 seems to have a pretty decent jump on it performance wise, unless I'm looking at some weird bench's.

Just thought I'd post it for posterity.

Both are pretty good overclockers. The X1650Pro will easily be able to match an X1650XT and probably OC just as well as an XT. The 7600GT is a great overclocker that can reach the performance of a 7800GS and beyond.

That said, go for the cheaper one and strap some good cooling on there
