Urgent! Hard drive data recovery?

MANY THANKS IN ADVANCE~

ok. I had over 30 hard drives in the past 10 years. The only three that ever failed within the warranty are Western Digital brand. However, I do praise their advance warranty exchange program, which I receive my replacement the next day after filed a RMA.

This time, one of my WD RE2 500GB SATA gives up without a warning. My P5K deluxe won't post if I have the SATA cable connected to drive (this is not my OS drive; I have XP on a raptor 150GB raid 0). I have to disable raid and set SATA to IDE mode in order to post. Even then the WD RE2 500GB show up as WD Zexus 0GB in the bios, a complete wrong HDD with 0GB capacity .

Here is the thing; my data recovery program only runs in Windows. But I can't past post when I have this drive connected. To do that, I have to disable RAID support on SATA and reinstall OS into a single raptor 150GB under IDE mode (which is a lot trouble).

But my question is, would data recovery even work on this drive since the firmware looks corrupted. Also, anything else I could do to extract the data, other than paying thousands for a professional data recovery?

Psun, I was going to suggest putting the drive in a usb enclosure but its SATA right? Thats what I usually do when I do data recovery. I throw the drive in a enclosure, boot to a CD and run R-Studio.

Do you have another computer to try the drive with?

thx guys...rep+ I am going to remove this hdd from my home computer and try it with the sata card in my office computer.

After speaking with WD customer tech, they insisted my issue is a result of using WD5000YS in a non-raid setup I know Caviar RE2 may have the most performance gain in a raid array, but I was never told that running them as individual drive will cause them to fail???

I guess I am REQUIRED to set it up in either mirror or stripping raid when I get my replacement...

b4 try it on a different computer...

I tried to disconnect that drive from the system during post and reconnect it after boot into windows. Since the SATA is hot swappable, I should be able to see it in OS. But.... NO... The system detected a new component named "WDC Zeus 0GB HDD" but I couldn't find it anywhere in device manager (not even in disk management).

You can also download a KNOPPIX Live CD and boot from that.
Then you could copy your data over onto another HD. This would give you a windows-like interface on your home computer...it is quite handy! I keep one around for this exact reason.

Ouch Psun, I really hope you don't have to send that off to a data recovery site. It sounds like to me maybe the partition table became corrupted or the firmware became extremely messed up but I don't see how that could have happened. Was this drive under excessive heat during use?

*edit* Also did a search on the introwebz0r and couldn't find anything at all on "WDC Zeus 0GB HDD". This is a strange issue hehe.

Thx for the rep

I expect this to be a firmware corruption or a short circuit. Anything else won't affect Bios detection. I am too lazy drive to work and test this drive (traffic hours, driving from Walnut to Irvine) on PCI raid card. So I bought a e.sata cable to link this drive to the other sata controller on my board (P5K deluxe have two sata cards, ICH9R and JMB363), no luck there.

I guess there is nothing that I could do at this point.

Psun, check out this link. Did some googling and came up on this but it looks like the part was discontinued
http://www.essdatarecovery.com/hdd.asp

Pretty much everything that I search for says to just send in the drive to a data recovery lab if it has firmware corruption.

If the data is really important, you could always buy the same drive and use the PCB on that one and put it on the corrupted drive but I don't know if that would work hahah. I know older drives you can take off the PCB that has the firmware chip on it. It just unscrews. Please dont try this haha only if your desperate, I don't know if it would work. Then just RMA the corrupted WD.
