Ideal WC Setup (Lian-Li PC60 case)

Thread Starter
Hey all, never dabbled in watercooling before, and I'm not quite sure I'm ready to make the plunge (ehe) into this arena of computer cooling. But at least I'm looking for more information so if and when I decide I am ready, I'll have more information to go upon.

Right now my sig rig is up to date with the current speeds/temps/cooling solutions, and I was kicking around the idea of moving to water cooling for the simplest factor of more silent operation. I realize the pump + radiator fans will still produce noise, it'll just be WAY less than the 4 x 80mm Lian-Li stock fans and the 100+CFM Panaflo attached to my heatsink right now.

So, a few questions:

1) Is watercooling even feasible given the interior dimensions in my computer? I'd like to keep it 100% internally if at all possible, hoping for that "sleeper" look, unmodified case from the outside.
2) If it is feasible, what kind of components would you experts suggest I look into for the loop(s)?
3) I've heard of one single loop for the cpu/gpu, and also heard of separate loops (and separate rads?) for each component. Pros/Cons to each setup?
4) What kind of costs can I expect for an ideal setup? Budget setup? Just trying to get an idea of what I should be saving up for in the eventuality that I make the switch.

Hmmm, I think that about covers it. If I've left anything out that you need/like to know to help me more, let me know!

I'm don't know the lay out of your case I'll let someone who is help you piece a rig together...

I'd use at least a 240 rad for a CPU only and a 360 for CPU and GPU...If your planning on a quad-core you might want to set up 2 separate loops...If its just a 2-core you can probably get buy with both on a 360 rad...Seperate loops are good and thats what I would do if I was going to cool my GPU also..But it a lot of extra work and expense and more chances of leaks...For a first loop I would go as simple as possible till you get the mechanics of it down...Its easy but if you've never done one you've never done one...

You can put a really good CPU only loop together for $250 and up...If you look around and buy used parts less then that...You could build one a lot cheaper but it wouldn't fit in with the look your wanting....A heater-core is hard to tuck away someplace......I like to keep my rad out of th ecase and in the cooler room ambient...You can always hang it on the back or top of your case....

I'll leave you some good stuff to read...Learn a little about it now and you will be able to build a superior rig for less $$$...I'll leave you my PDF also it has some of the things I like to do in it....

I've noticed some of these links are loading real slow, they are worth waiting on they have great advise in them...

Anyone else have any input so far? I'm still reading all the links and such and trying to digest as much as possible, but the more information I can get my hands on, the better. Thanks!

OK you will have to check your measurements and see of this stuff will work with your case,,,

CPU block....fstfrddy makes a nice custom one...I use the all metal Stingers and really like them...

...Stinger Water Blocks

Or a Fuzion...

...Fuzion CPU Block

Pump...

...D-5

Rad...This for higher cfm 120x38mm fans..Or a Thermochill PA for lower cfm fans...

...360 GTX

Rad-Box to hang the rad off the back of your case...

...Rad-Box

GPU block...You need to use ram sinks with these but they work great and keep all the ram heat out of your loop...

....Swifty 60 GPU Block

Tubing...I like to use 7/16x5/8" Masterkleer on 1/2" fittings...It will flow about as well as full 1/2" and is not as bulky...

...7/16x5/8" Masterkleer

Full 1/2x3/4"...

...1/2x3/4" Masterkleer

Res or T-Line....

... Danger Den Single 5 1/4" Bay Reservoir

Hmmm, so based on those numbers (assuming that all fit - going to crunch some numbers this weekend), I'd be looking at around $400 spent with the DTek FuZion waterblock. How much does he sell those stinger waterblocks for? I couldn't locate a price on the site, does he only do quotes/pricing via email?

Yeah you can just E-Mail him or send him a PM here...He did have an all copper s/775 block the other day that hasn't been used...He sold it to someone and they never used it and fstfrddy is trying to help him sell it...He had a pretty good price on it to...He has some plexi topped blocks that are not as expensive but I like all metal blocks...I have a V-6 and a V-8 and a V-8p which is a 437W Pelt block in the mail....I really like them...

That sounds really tempting. Though currently I have no need or funds for watercooling (already idling on air just a few C above ambient), it still intrigues me to see what the hype about watercooling is all about. I might one day get the cajones to tinker, but for now its pure research

Addendum to the first post, another question:

Given my current setup and temps, is there any other benefit (besides lower temps) to making the change from air to water? What are these benefits?

*yanks this thread up from the depths of the forums...*

Well, since my birthday is a short ways away, and Christmas is shortly after that, computer funds might find their way into my bank account, so I'd like to revisit this subject again. I talked with Trendy extensively yesterday and he's talked me out of the full internal setup I had originally been planning on. I do not mind mounting a 240 rad on the outside of my case, however there is a small snag that I did not get to discuss with him. My case has four 80mm fan slots in it, and there are no 120mm spots. Is the only way to mount a 240 rad on the top of my case after drilling mounting holes for it? I would not mind a minor modification like that.

Assuming that this kind of setup would work (after removing the top 80mm fan and drilling holes there for the in/out lines), I've got a general idea of what kind of hardware I'd need:

- BIX240, Swiftech 220, or a Thermochill PA120.2 radiator (I'd like to save money here, but if the Thermochill really is leagues better than the other...)
- D-Tek fuZion waterblock (still has the slag problem?) or Apogee GT/GT Extreme (any good?)
- Laing DDC w/ Petra Top (Is this the variable model? I think so, but I'm not sure...)
- 7/16" ID tubing around 1/2" OD barbs (possibly Iandh's, we'll see how funding goes..)
- PT Nuke and some distilled water
- Hose clamps or zip ties (I have zip ties, but if hose clamps are more secure against leaks, I can get some of those)
- T-Line or Bay res, I'm not sure what the benefits are for each of these, or what's recommended for a first time WC'er.

I think that about covers it...if I've missed anything, please fill me in! I'm in a similar boat as Dezixn I think, planning it all out now so around Christmastime I can order and set it all up.
