I loved both games, great fun.

Since you posted this around midnight, I would recommend Doom 3, it is dark, late, thus perfect time!

once the sun comes up switch to HL2.

Doom 3 was garbage where HL2 is probably the greatest FPS ever made

QTF, for mature people HL2 is much more appealing

So much Doom bashing...It's a tougher question than most people are making out, I think. It depends on what you're looking for. Here are some points in defense of Doom 3:

Doom 3 was meant to be a horror game. They slowed the action down so much compared to most FPS that it almost blurs the line between FPS and survival horror. The story is slim, sure; but that's not what the game is about. It's about being scared, and fighting off a crapload of demons. It wouldn't have been "DOOM" if they had made it anything else.

I will also argue that, even if you thought Doom's story was lame, at least it had a real ending. The ending of HL2 was about the stupidest thing ever; and then they totally copped out at the beginning of Episode 1. Valve may get props for engaging the player in a robust story, but they really need to take some lessons in how to write an ending.

Having said this, the edge still goes to HL2. What makes me give it the nod is the variety of environments. The "repetitive" comments about Doom 3 have some merit, in that all of the martian station environments look basically the same after a while. You find yourself longing for the occasional "go outside" level, and by the end I was wondering if I was ever going to get into Hell. By contrastr, HL2 mixes up the environments and mission types frequently; so it always seems fresh.

I voted HL2.... but DOOM 3 was a really good game imho.

hmmm... methinks I should dust this one off and agive it another go-around!

Any experience that sets me on edge, raises my blood pressure and causes my hair to stand on-end is a worthwhile experience.

(sans FEAR...too much for me )

HL2 by far..it owns doom3 IMO.
NO NO... you misread the OP, he is going to play BOTH games, he wants to know which one to play FIRST.

I picked Doom 3, cause its CRAP. Its better to play HL2 second, it is leagues ahead of Doom 3 in gameplay, immersion, scenery... etc, so get Doom 3 out of the way, then spend the rest of your life playing HL2 and its myriads of mods

What you could do is install HL2 first then open it up and let steam start decrypting it, then install Doom3. You'll probably be finished Doom 3 around the same time that steam finishes updating and decrypting HL2, lol, so just in time for you to dump Doom 3 off your HDD and free up all that space for CS:S maps and HL2 mods w00t!!!
