When the quantum computing becomes available it will be the end of our old way of life. The amount of computational power available will open doors we can only dream about right now. When used to design and run nanotechnology we'll be able to manipulate atoms in a very complex way. What does that mean, well you can take a lump of raw material and literally program it to become what you want. Medical science will be revolutioized, you'll be maintained and repaired with nanotech at all times, virtually the elimination of disease and potentially aging. When we can alter our bodies and our environment almost at will then colonization of the solar system and beyond are easy tasks. The rate at which knowledge and advancement is achieved will be increased by many fold all the time as quantum computing answers more and more questions about the very nature of the universe itself. The economy will be eliminated eventually as there's no need for money anymore (besides, when you can manufacture bills on a sub atomic level whats the bloody point). Nanotechnolgy is really being held back by the lack of computer power to aid in design of these machines, and the ability to control a vast network of tiny machine able to work together to manipulate molecules and eventually maybe even atoms.
Sounds like sci-fi but if you think about it it's all very doable with the proper application of the massive computational power of the quantum computer.
very true... i wouldnt be surprised that if when the first quantum computer is flipped on- the universe instantly collapses or transforms itself into a giant quantum computer -(if it isnt one already) or something equally dramatic. maybe a little alien will pop its head out and say, "finally, we've been waiting."
But seriously though, you were right on about the nanotech- and along with that, it seems to me that a powwerful quantum computer will also open the way up for crazy possibilities in the field of transportation like- folding of space, wormhole creating/connecting, teleportation, and even time travel.
And finally, just the basic building, operation and use of a quamputer©, will mean thah our knowledge of quantum mechanics has probably matured to a level where the universe/reality will be understood to a degree that might actually change the way people think
