You mean format the drive or just clean certain stuff off? For formatting, i'd say use compuapps swissknife v3. I like it.

I mean erasing all the data so nothing is recoverable. Thanks for the replies!

The windows CD will only erase the "address book" (idk what it is called) for the data, the computer does not know where do look for the data, therefore it thinks it does not exist.
Software can go back and relocate the data for you...a quick format is NOT a secure method. You must use something like Boot + Nuke to go through and erase all of the data.

You should set it so that it will perform at least 1 random pass (writing random 1s and 0s to the HD) this makes it MUCH harder to recover the data than just a single all 0 pass.
3 passes is a standard security format...if you have REALLY sensitive data, you would want to do 7+ passes.

However, the ONLY true way to erase the data is to burn the platter (a rather extreme method).

It'd be nice if you posted something of value. Windows doesn't overwrite stuff on the drive. It's the same as deleting stuff and removing from Recycle Bin. It's still recoverable until you overwrite it once, maybe even twice.

Boot and Nuke is good, get something that writes a series of 0's, 1's, or both.
