Sales of PlayStation 3 jump-started 135 percent since price cut

In response to the latest console hardware sales numbers reported by NPD Group, Sony contacted DailyTech and other media with its own internal data on PlayStation 3 sales.
According to Sony’s data, PS3 sales have increased by more than 135 percent at the company's top five retailers since the new $499 price was announced two weeks ago on July 9.
The surge in PS3 sales helped to send total PlayStation hardware up 161 percent, software up 15 percent and peripherals by 60 percent.
"The new price on the 60 GB PS3, coupled with our very strong software showing from E3, is certainly paying dividends in terms of impressive sales across the board at retail," said Jack Tretton, president and CEO, SCEA.
Tretton continued by outlining the upcoming lineup of promising PS3 software: "This jump in sales bodes very well for us heading into the fall as we launch an impressive arsenal of hardware and software, leading off with the new 80 GB PS3 in August along with the unveiling of highly anticipated games such as Lair and Warhawk. That will be followed by Heavenly Sword in September and six more exclusive first-party PS3 games in October, including Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction."

if Rachet doesn't invoke interest in the console in october then things won't go well for Sony, even though i know they still have MGS4 and FF13 in their pockets....

There will be some good main titles but I think the games in general will decide the PS3'S fate.

Exactly. A two-week surge in sales does not imply a healthy turnaround; it just demonstrates the pent up demand for the price cut. Remember all the articles about how PS3 sales increased something like 2800% on Amazon the day the price cut was announced? Big whoop!

Next month's figures will be more interesting. It will represent a full month, and it will also factor in the new knowledge that the doscounted 60GB model is discontinued. Will people continue to jump on it knowing that it's essentially the "old" model? (They should, IMHO.) Or will they hold off, expecting the 80GB model to be cut to $500 when the 60GBs are gone?

Also, it should be noted that these same figures showed that the Wii is outselling the PS3 3-to-1, and the X360 2-to-1. So while things may be looking up for the PS3, keep it in perspective: they are struggling to get into a fight with Microsoft for second place at the moment.

(Not that it's a direct competitor, but the DS is doing gangbusters over all of the consoles. Adding the Wii and DS together, Nintendo moved over a million pieces of hardware last month. I should buy some stick in Nintendo, methinks.)

I would get it just fro MGS4, based on the trailers I've seen for it so far.

Umm, kinda wierd question, and I don't know if anyone could answer it or not. Do you guys know if Nippon Ichi is developing any games from PS3 right now?

And it's about time Nintendo started making some money again. Everyone said the Revolution (back when it was called that) would decide Nintendo's fate, after how poorly the N64 and Gamecube did in relation to other Nintendo systems, and their competitors. Well, looks like Nintendo's around for a long time to come.

looks like ps3 sales have balanced out on the 360:

As reported by MCV, ChartTrack statistics show that PS3 and Xbox 360 sales for the first 38 weeks of 2007 are almost identical.

Importantly though, 55 percent of all PS3s sold were shifted during the console's first 4 weeks in stores. Contrastingly, the Xbox 360 is still benefiting from a recent price cut and the introduction of a new model, having outsold the PS3 week-on-week since the Elite was launched in August.

Barring the announcement of a PS3 price cut, ChartTrack director Dorian Bloch predicts that Xbox 360 sales are likely to trump those of Sony next-gen system during 2007. A wider software portfolio was also cited as reason to expect the 360 to dominate its rival in the run-up to Christmas.

Did they take into account the recent launches of Halo 3 and Bioshock?
