ubuntu 7.04 burning my eyes on x800pro - Page 2

Yeah, go in the console and type "su -", and then type in your password. Next, "cd /etc/grub", and then "gedit grub.conf &". Once you open this, you should see an entry for Ubuntu, and it should be pretty clear whatever option is making it the default. Just move that option from the Ubuntu line to the Windows XP line, and you'll be set.

Sorry, I don't know the exact option, but that part is in plain english, so you should be able to understand it, because I did, lol. I'll check later when I get home. Let me know if you have any trouble.

Actually, I may not have the location of the grub.conf file exactly correct. I have Fedora myself, and I think this is where it is in Fedora, but even if I'm right it may be different for Ubuntu.

If you can't find grub.conf, try "find / -name "grub.conf" -print", and that should tell you the directory that it's in so that you can open it as per the directions above.

Easy Ubuntu is an application that will assist you in installing the latest legacy and current commercial ATI drivers.

Also research the xorg.conf file as well as your monitor and graphics card. You may be manually configuring a setting option in the xorg file.
Ubuntu/Kubuntu allow you to choose from generic, device type, and specific drivers. It may take a certain combination.

The reason more people don't go to Linux is because of elitist аssholes like you. I'm pretty sure you weren't born knowing anything about a console. All of us have to learn at one time or another. Saying things like if you don't do it for a good reason go back to windows is not cool.

Now back to the OP:

Like CubicleDweller (helpfully) suggested Easybuntu will do almost everything for you since you're using Ubuntu. This includes the ATI drivers for your card. Also the Ubuntu Forums cover pretty much everything I've ever had a problem with in Ubuntu and most of the time you get help from friendly people who are willing to spend some time and explain things to you.

For the first few weeks (and yeah you have to stick at it to ever learn anything in Linux) you'll be copying and pasting things into consoles but after a while you'll be like "Oh yeah now I remember" and it'll be as easy as windows if not easier.

????? If you actually read my post you will realize that I said the basically same thing as you: basically to "keep trying" and i was telling him that learning the console is important(in my opinion one of the main factors that seperates linux from other OS's.), because from what he said it sounded like he wasnt interested in learning the console or taking the time to learn it. I dunno maybe the sarcasm /kidding didnt comunicate well through the mode of this forum but i thpought i made it clear with the face. once again i was joking about the going back to windows part- and after that i was trying to find out his "reason" for using ubuntu- trying to stress the importance of learning the console (which i dont know much about at all, so i wouldnt consider myself elitist in the slightest bit).

All other OS's aside from modern Windows and MAC OS are command line/UNIX style OS's with graphical front ends. If you want to go anywhere but Windows or Mac you will need to understand command line or UNIX.

There are plenty of guides all over the internet about basic linux commands. I am fortunate to use linux everyday in my work so it keeps me fresh but for those who don't here is a good tool for you to learn them: http://www.linuxdevcenter.com/linux/cmd/
With that it's all about clicking and reading...

This one is very simple and even gives you shortcut key combinations for XORG shells: http://www.unixguide.net/linux/linuxshortcuts.shtml
