Overvolting 3.3v rail

Thread Starter 
Is it safe and acceptable to run your 3.3v rail up to 3.6v or so without damaging the system. I am asking because I have some BH5 that I am trying to feed some more vdimm to but it looks like I have to up the 3.3v rail in order to do so. I have 520w OCZ Powerstream with adjustable rails so I am not talking about doing some sort of voltmod, just an adjustment. Is it going to fry anything within my system by running it higher?

5% on 3.3v, 5v, and 12v.

Increasing your voltages on the PSU line is NOT a good idea at all. The power is not directly feed into the the memory. The motherboard does some voltage regulation. It's like overvolting your PCIe slots and expect to get more performance. In actuality, you are stressing the regulators and making performance worse. More PSU voltage does not mean more component voltage.


EDIT: It is 4% or 5% on the 3.3v depending on which revision of the ATX PSU spec. The newest ATX PSU 2.2 says 5%.

So you are telling me that even if my 3.3v rail is at a true 3.3v I can still feed my vdimm 3.4+?

yes just change the setting in bios to 3.4v and the voltage regultors will do the rest

Is there a 5v mod or jumper availiable for your motherboard? I know on the DFI nF4 Expert there is an option.

Also, how do you plan to overvolt your 3.3v rail? One way to do so is to overvolt the entire PSU. Doing so is an easy way to kill your system. The other way is to get a dedicated single rail PSU... but it would be easier just to get a new mobo that supports 5v memory.

I don't beleve the 250Gb has a jumper such as the Expert does. I would overvolt by the adjustable rails that the OCZ has. Sounds like you guys answered all of my questions so I will just have to wait until I get home to mess around with the setting a little bit and see if I can get some more out of this memory.

What OCZ PSU has adjustable rails?

I highly recommend you do not adjust the voltages other than to keep the with 1% of the stated value.
