It's a fully functional HD DVD player. I was skeptical at first about the USB also, but there are no problems with it at all. The only thing that sucks about it IMO is the noise produced between the 360 and the addon drive. Unless I've got my stereo turned up quite a bit, the noise they make is very distracting and annoying, especially during quiet points in movies.

Is it as capable as any other stand-alone HD DVD Drive? Probably not. But it plays HD DVD's in hull HD...it gets the job done. Quite frankly, the 360 is more of the limiting factor than anything here.

on the note of blockbuster carrying either format...
I do work at a location in Canada.

In our computer system we have both Blu-ray and HD dvd versions of the movies that have came out. They are JUST in our system so we are preparing for either/both.

Just the other day we received a few movies in blu-ray, one of them being 300. Our head office are fools though, so we'll see how long it takes for Canadian stores to carry both formats.

That's because, up until recently, the stores that carried HD movies carried both formats. So yes, the HD-DVDs will be in your computer system. But because the Blu-Rays are being rented much more (because there are more of them), HD-DVD is being dropped. I don't know if they will remove them from the stores that already carry them, but the stores getting HD movies for the first time will probably only receive Blu-Ray.

According to the news, anyway.

From what I know the HD-DVD drive does display up to 1080i

It depends on what connection you use from the 360 and if your HDTV accepts 1080p from that connection. I have the 360 premium and I use component cables to my Sony Bravia HDTV. My TV won't do full 1080p over components, so I'm limited to 1080i. DVI will also deliver 1080p, as will HDMI....but it's really its dependant on the Tv.

HDCP applies to HDMI and DVI only I believe. So actually I don't think you'll be able to get 1080p from components regardless if your TV accepts the signal or not (But I'm not sure about that). Either way HDMI and DVI are the way to go for any high-def connection.

yeah i think your right. Un copyrighted material can be displayed at 1080p over component but if its copyrighted i think you need dvi or hdmi. Good thing i have both lol.
