2x 2900XT Crossfire vs 2x Ultra 8800? - Page 8

Well water cooling best case scenario for me but I have a really good air cooling rig setup for all my new gear and my comp noise is not really a problem unless it sounds like a 747 taking off. LN2 is out of the question and my 2900xt vs 8800 ultra was directed at a user-end not LN2.

Well this review is stuffed full of good comparison bw the two. Keep in mind that this isn't the latest driver...but it's close. 7.7 beta I believe.

Is it jsut me or does the 2900xt seem a bit loud? People complain about 45db fans yet the 2900 xt puts out 75 at load! For those new to the "db" system, every 3 db higher is twice as loud, so 43 is twice as loud as 40, 46 is twice as loud as 43 and four times louder then 40.

just stop right there. it's impossible to logically justify spending that kind of money on video cards. the ONLY reason to build a system like that is for bragging rights on forums.

and the downside to spending that kind of money on a top of the line system is that you'll feel all bothered about it when the next big thing comes along. if you buy an 8800GTX or a 2900XT right now, you should be happy with it for a long time. but if you spend mucho $$$ on a pair of 8800 Ultras, you're bound to be upset when the 8900's come out and start setting new records. a top of the line system will only remain top of the line for a few months.

I would politely disagree.....

Personally I wont be upset at all.
I have had fun playing with GTS cards, GTX cards and Ultras all this time.
I realise things are always evolving and noone is forcing me to buy anything, why should I or anyone be upset?

I will never argue the Ultras are amazing value for money but thats not whats being discussed.

You do know that in 3dmark06, the QUAD CPUs score around 7k on their own.

Well I will be able to tell you tomorrow when mine arrives from newegg...
I doubt it will be louder than my system fans. I typically run my GFX fans at %100 24/7. I don't really care about fan noise, as my PC is in my living room. Now if you live with your parents and you sleep 4 feet from your PC that may be an issue....
