Are you going to say PowerPC, because that is a whole different architecture from x86...

AMD can very well afford to sell quad's for under 300$. Manufacturing cpu's isn't too expensive, the real cost is the R&D which can be payed off over time as the chip generates sales.

Yes, and all of the CPUs you named are from AMD and Intel. I think you may have missed the point. If AMD went chapter 11 (just for example) then only Intel would be making x86 CPUs for us mainstream desktop users. I'm sure this would make a lot of you happy (though I'm not sure why, as Intel would be able to charge more and wouldn't be pressed to develop better technologies because of a total lack of competition in this area of the market...)

You'll probably outgrow that mentality. Judging a product on its merit is much more intelligent than emotional shopping. I have to laugh at the guys that take the whole "chevy vs ford" thing so personally that they feel involved in it. Talk about a marketing department's wet dream....these guys will blindly follow with no incentive or reward for doing so.

If you truthfully believe this, then can you share your explanation as to why Intel charged nearly $1,000 for its EE processors? Both companies charged premium prices in the past, but fierce competition has driven them both downward.

I buy whatever product is the best performer. Look over to the left of this text and you might peg me for an AMD fanboi, but the most recent processor I bought was a Core 2 Duo because they are the best RIGHT NOW. If the new K10 benchmarks better than Intel's offering, I will be investing in that.

I really hope Barcelona succeeds or at least competes with the Penryn, that should keep both Intel and AMD busy on next gen cpu's. I wished ATI and Nvidia played the market like Intel and AMD, offering price drops on awesome products, I mean nowadays you can get a Quad-Core CPU for 270$! Back in the day, a P4 would cost you that much and what it offered was crap compared to todays price for performance ratio.

I totally didn't read that right.

Yeah, I guess I'm dumb... but I just assumed you were at first...

EDIT: Well, there are those integrated VIA CPUs like in this motherboard
