we were running on a [GeForce] 8800 video card and a dual-core Intel [CPU]with 4 gigabytes of RAM at very high settings. Not the highest, though! Most of the time, it was running smoothly.
Most of the time? Not the highest settings? That 8800 had better been an 8800GTS, although I really doubt that they used an 8800GTS more likely an 8800GTX or Ultra. This stinks, that an 8800 can't run it too well or atleast the highest settings. The game code better be optimized really well, not everyone wants to shell out 500$+.

True, but I'm buying a 1080P monitor and perhaps a 9800GTX, seeing as the 8800 GTX won't be able to handle it too well.

When the interviewee replied saying the game ran smooth "most of the time," with an 8800...If there is no card on the market that can run the game at its max settings, there's something wrong..

Exactly what I'm assuming. Something important to note is that he mentioned that they will continue optimizing the game so that it can run on low-end hardware, hopefully they will do a good job on optimizing the game code so that the 8800GTX can play it pretty well, if not it's all up to the 9800. The game itself is incredibly amazing (graphics) and I can fully understand why people are shelling out a lot of money for high-end hardware.

It's also not fair for the many people that bought 8800's. What good was it buying it, if you can't even play DX10 games at high/max settings.

Although hopefully it may only be for this game alone, and other DX10 games will be fine. Hopefully..

Great minds do think a like. lol, seriously we think similarly. Especially since it's like a 500$ card. People are saying that future drivers and DX10 native games will help improve performance, I myself am thinking about getting an 8800 or just a 2900XT, but DX10 performance is too poor as of right now.
