well, I took apart my 2900 today to put the waterblock on, and I have some good news, and bad news. The good news is that when I took off the heatsink, all the ram is cooled with non-stick pads which makes taking this apart a breeze, took me maybe 3 minutes. The back panel is the same way and pops right off. This makes putting it back together very easy. Now for the BAD news.
Whoever put the thermal paste (TIM for thermal interface material) on here is a moron. A GORILLA could have done a better job. Why cover the core, when you can cover everything inside the shim with gobs of TIM? It was so rediculous that I had to take pictures. There is NO NEED for this at all.
Next BAD thing.. The maze-4 will NOT fit on this card, with ANY pin configuration on the block. Maybe it is my block, or my hold down, but there is no way this will ever, ever fit.
Next BAD thing.. The pads covering the ramsinks on the stock cooler only cover about half or so of the actual ram, there is air for the other half. I noticed when I pulled it off that there was a spot that I could tell where the pads were covering. Definitely not the whole ram module.
So, anyone have an idea for a COMPATIBLE core-only cooler that will work with this card? Id like to use the Fuzion GPU holddown, but Im not sure if it is compatible. Let me know if you have an idea, as I spent ~$40 to get ramsinks and mosfet sinks so I could cool this without using a full coverage block, which I now really, really wish I had.
