Opteron 165 OC & Hyper Transport - Page 2

I have the bad stepping of the opteron 165 that I got about 2 years ago, I dont really remember what stepping it was. I keep mine at stock voltage at 280x9 HT multi 3x. I don't see the point to increase voltages because of the heat I get when I do that.

I also read somewhere that using all four of your memory banks will limit your overclocking performance. I am not sure about that one though correct me if I am wrong.

Edit - MY divider is at 2/1 which gives me ddr speed of 314. the next divider up gives me 418 and it wont boot.
okay, so now it wont boot with ht multi 3x and 315 fsb. i changed ht back to 1 and it booted.
so it booted once, but now dosnt. gr lol.

Just to confirm, this is correct. The reason is that having four DIMMs puts a big strain on the IMC (Integrated Memory Controller) on the CPU. A "bad" IMCs handles four DIMMs far worse than a "good" IMC.

(Also, some motherboards also handle four DIMMs better than others. DFIs, for instance, are sometimes more forgiving.)

You mentioned that your Opteron is one from a duff stepping. Stepping information is most useful in knowing which memory controller version your CPU has. The stepping code indicates which memory controller version you have, and, as you may know, IMCs are not all equal. Some are definitely better than others.

Hope this helps!
