DMI stands for Desktop Management Interface, try loading the defaults in your BIOS, take out all unnecessary PCI cards and such to boot. If that doesn't work clear CMOS and if that doesn't you may have to reflash BIOS.

I think I'm just going to reflash anyway. I'm not that far into loading everything. The most annoying part about that is connecting my floppy drive. Can I flash from a USB drive? My floppy cable is too short to reach the mounting, so I have to take out the drive and have it sit on the floor till I'm done.

Oh, an interesting side-note here. My D-Link Wireless card is PCI and I haven't been able to connect to the internet because it says it can't find enough system resources to function. Could this be a symptom of the problem? (I'm currently on a much older computer)

Try taking the wireless card out and seeing what it does. I would just have the floppy sit on the floor if need be, I find it a lot easier to flash from the floppy then a USB drive.

WOuld I need to permenantly remove the card? Or would that just rearrange some resources so I could put the card back in and have it work? Because that card is my only access to the Net from that comp.

Alright, nm. I removed the card and it still doesn't work. I'm just going to reflash and seriously hope that it works. Time for me to get ready for work atm, however. Thanks a lot for your help everyone. Duke, your always there to save my day, lol. PiratesRule, thanks for all the details. I'll be back on this thread tonight to say whether or not flashing worked.

About the slow BIOS save.. do you have a USB flash drive connected? (just to be safe, disconnect anything USB)

Ok guys, I flashed the BIOS to the newest version from ASUS. This cleared all IRQ conflicts and allowed me to use my Wireless Ethernet card and my sound card.

However, getting stuck in the "UPDT DMI" phase is still around. It happens less often, but still happens and sits for about 15 seconds on that black screen before loading Windows when it is successful. Does this mean that the problem does not lie with BIOS? Or is it a nightmare and my BIOS is bad?

I"ve come to believe that "UPDT DMI" on my little LCD poster is a normal process of booting up, and for some mysterious reason my system keeps hanging there.

Should I try flashing again? Just to be sure? i don't want to take the chance of ruining my BIOS entirely.

Also, it is interesting to note that hitting "CLR CMOS" on my mobo, even repeatedly, does not load the defaults into BIOS and in fact does not alter my settings at all.

Is there some kind of diagnostic tool or command I can use to show every minute detail of what's going on? It seems as though there's one particular test or one particular command that it's freezing on, or isn't completing correctly.

Hmmm...I would give Asus's technical support a call. I don't think flashing again will solve anything.

lol, the last resort, eh? I hope they're open on Saturdays. If not, once it does get past that roadblock it performs fine, so it's not a hinderance unless I have to shut down for some reason. Still enough to be very very bothersome though.
