Not a lecture bud, and it was in no way pointed at you at all.
I am merely stating the general public is not smart about what they 'back'.

If you have the EE model with the large single fan, it's at least a decent model from Andyson (it still isn't great though).
Must be nice to have the money for a rig like yours and not give a care about the people who can't afford to go all out.
Willing to bet my PSU would power your setup fine.
But you wouldn't want that 'crap unit' in your case would you?
Look - not starting a fight over this. All I am saying is there is a lot of people out there who would just tell people 'forget ultra, they suck' whilst they sit there with a 1200w mega psu on their dual xenon setup.
People who need quality - cheap - need to get honest answers out of people like us on boards like this.
Honestly, I don't go anywhere besides OCN. I trust a lot of people around here. I just don't like seeing 'new fold' get bad advice.

Ultra used to make some bad PSUs. Nowadays, they are very good mid-range to even high-range PSUs. That is why this thread needs to go away. It was brought up when the old 500watt junkers were still up for sale in some markets. They are gone, and so should the talk about 'ultra' as a brand being 'crap.'

When did I ever criticize anything but the quality of your PSU? There are plenty of decent units to be had a reasonable prices. The days of the 500W junkers from Ultra are far from over. The only PSUs worth buying from Ultra, are the X3 800, 1000, 1600, the X-Pro and X-finity 800W and the X-pro 750. Everything else is not worth the money and is poorly built, overrated junk.

I am not giving bad advice. I think I do plenty to contribute to this forum, which mostly consists of sharing my knowledge of PSUs.

I am not speaking about just you, or only you.
I am talking about the general public not giving anything but the best, a chance. I honestly don't care what you think about my PSU- because it's done damn good for me for over 2 years and will do so into my C2Q future. That I am sure of. So if my PSU is

Then I guess the $70 I spent on it over 2 years ago was not worth it.
Honestly, big post count and rep count don't mean much to me when you can sit here and talk down to people who can't afford the big dog PSUs and have done plenty well on the 'crap unit'.

But can you prove that it is running your system well? What's the state of your capacitors? Is ripple in check? If you had ever tried to use it as a 600W unit, you would find out quickly just how poor it is.

It's good that your unit is still alive and kickin. Just because it isn't a good unit doesn't automatically mean it will die in 6 months in a shower of sparks.

I don't even know why I'm still bothering with this thread. All I am doing is making Ultra owners defensive because I am honest with them about the quality of their PSUs.

A 'good unit' is a unit that serves it's purpose.
Mine has a purpose of handing my power demands.
Good unit.
And since when do people use 600w PSUs for a PC with a demand of 600w?
Most people would go with a 750/800 or more psu.

Not a good unit. Bologna.
It's good because it does what is needed of it.
Just because you know about it's 'ripple' and what not doesn't give you the right to call it a 'crap unit'. That my friend is a matter of opinion.
I honestly hope people take your advice with a grain of salt. If I had listened to you 2 years ago, I would have spent a hundred bucks more than neccessary.

No, a 'good' unit is one that it is built well, performs at least decently and can live up to it's claims on the label. None of the Wintech built Ultras can do that.

Even if you ran your 600W at a reasonable 450W load, it would be at it limits. It is not a 600W unit. If you went by it's 12V capacity of 35A, it should be labeled as a 500W. On top of that it is rated at 25C. It is greatly affected by increases in temperatures (called a derating curve), and a reasonable operating temperature of 35C would reduce it's capacity by about 50W. Padding your wattage rating by using 3.3V/5V capacity for a modern PSU is pure dishonesty.

'Ripple' is a very important performance characteristic of a PSU that often goes overlooked since it is tough to measure unless you have a decent o-scope.

You obviously don't care to educate yourself about what makes a good PSU. I'm not going to bother if it's just falling on deaf ears.

Well, the 850W model isn't even listed on Ultra's website. The only place I can find it is at Tigerdirect. By looking at pictures I would have to assume it is based on the same Andyson AD-800 as the 800W and 1000W X3 models. It's probably fine.
