Which programs don't work for you that you absolutely need? There are probably alternatives, and Vista is worth using them.
You also got the compatible idea wrong. It's "my programs become more compatible with Vista", not "Vista becomes more compatible with my programs".
On another note, since you don't have a DX10, you probably don't feel as compelled to upgrade.
Even without DX10, Vista feels and runs better than XP. It doesn't really take any getting used to either: I was used to Vista before finishing my video drivers download.
The only downside is you'll be used to how the windows beautifully appear and disappear, and when you're using XP, it'll bother you that they don't.
