I was just a kid back then but I remember how epic those companies were back in the day. I remember X-Com blowing me away at the time. And Strike Commander was the first game which really made me want to build a high end PC just for gaming.

hehe This.

Origin was notorious with requiring system builds and upgrades... I lost count how many dx and dx2 class systems I built for people "JUST" to play wing commander, privateer, and the Ultima series games.

Not until Crysis and Battlefield did we see a resurgence of the software driving hardware sales.

So much so, that BF3 (Digital Illusions) will have that honor again, or so we hope . When we have this, (software driving hardware) our hobby grows and people become enthusiastic about it.

For many people that are older today, it was that "build/play/upgrade/play" cycle that influenced were we are at today, it is the end of the cycle that spells the end of an era and perhaps the end of the hobby as we know it.

For me its a dead tie between Tribes 2 (its almost pathetic the amount of time I have played that game) and Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004. It's a shame FSX didn't pan out to be as fun and easy to mod, and for that reason my Saitek X52 sits alone in my closet waiting for another good flight simulation game.

Mechwarrior 2, starcraft, starcraft 2.

Mechwarrior 2 is what got me started in PC games on my first 486.

Planescape: Torment. It really shows that games can be much, much more than "just games".

Duke Nukem 3D and Redneck Rampage........RR crossed the line of good taste.....and I absolutely loved it.

I can't believe you fools. Nobody in the recent pages has mentioned Deus Ex. That game is a true classic. It brought you into the world, you never wanted the game to end. It had great story telling, deep characters, guns, interesting dialogue, RPG elements, just about everything you can want in a game.

Call of Duty 1 and 2 are also quality titles. I don't know how many years I wasted on them. The SP campaigns were great and had a decent length, and the multiplayer was amazing. No stupid perks or killstreaks. No upgrades. Just choose a gun and start playing. I always played search and destroy.

Mafia 1 is brilliant. Actually out of every game(yes even Deus Ex) Mafia 1 has to be the best story ever written for a computer game. It felt like a real movie. Even towards the end of the game when you thought it was over they added a twist. The story was entwined with the gameplay so much it felt like you were following a real person. If you have ever read an exciting book that put you in the thick of the action that you could not put down then you will have a sense of what Mafia was about. Mafia 2 was just an OK game but easily forgettable.

For all its faults, Bad Company 2 is a good online game. It is certainly one of the best online came to be released in recent years, so for now it is one of the best MP games. Until BF3 is released.

Metal gear solid 1 changed my world. Who would have thought that 20 minutes of gameplay and 50 hours of codec messaging could be so fun? Kojima you genius!

Golden Sun for the gameboy advance was my first 'true' rpg adventure. A lovely title that always warms my heart whenever I think of it.

Streets of Rage for the Sega is the ultimate coop game. They don't make em like they used to.

Technically Ridge Racer Type 4 was a fairly simple game especially when you compare it to Gran Turismo. However Ridge Racer was in a world of its own, own that Gran Turismo could never reflect.

Morrowind was it. Not sure what I would consider after that, there's so many.
