I was just a kid back then but I remember how epic those companies were back in the day. I remember X-Com blowing me away at the time. And Strike Commander was the first game which really made me want to build a high end PC just for gaming.
Origin was notorious with requiring system builds and upgrades... I lost count how many dx and dx2 class systems I built for people "JUST" to play wing commander, privateer, and the Ultima series games.
Not until Crysis and Battlefield did we see a resurgence of the software driving hardware sales.
So much so, that BF3 (Digital Illusions) will have that honor again, or so we hope
. When we have this, (software driving hardware) our hobby grows and people become enthusiastic about it.
For many people that are older today, it was that "build/play/upgrade/play" cycle that influenced were we are at today, it is the end of the cycle that spells the end of an era and perhaps the end of the hobby as we know it.
