Nielsen Console Ratings

Regardless of age, gamers still love the Sony PlayStation 2

Even though just about everyone is focused on the next-generation console battle between Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony, Nielsen reported that the Sony PlayStation 2 was the most played game console in June.

PS2 gameplay accounted for as much as 42 percent of console use in the month of June - a number that really shouldn't surprise people. Considering the amount of PS2 consoles sold since its release in 2000, I am not surprised that so many people are still playing the older Sony console.

Here are the numbers for the other major consoles on the market: Microsoft Xbox, 17 percent; Xbox 360, 8 percent; Nintendo Gamecube, 5.8 percent; Wii, 4 percent; and PlayStation 3, 1.3 percent.

Nielsen's sample was made up of 33,000 people - 12,000 households.

And since I am discussing Nielsen GamePlay Metrics data, the media research company also found that the Nintendo Wii game console - despite being cheaper than its competition - is the console most likely to be found in households that have at least a $100,000 income per year.

Nielsen is already crunching numbers dealing with console video game titles and metering of PC game titles - those numbers will be available sometime soon.

Earlier this week the NPD Group reported that Nintendo Wii and DS again led hardware sales in June.

I find it interesting that the Wii is most likely to be found in homes with annual incomes of over $100K. Given it's low price, I'd assume the opposite.

I figure by the time the PS2 starts to lose momentum, the PS3 will have dropped considerably in price. Sony's already got the customer base...the PS3 I imagine would be a suitable replacement for its older brother. But the PS2 is definitely a cash cow for Sony, something most people forget I think.

They're not going to have any trouble moving their PS2 user base into next gen, there's no question about that.

There are still some PS2 games I want to play...I think they should still come out with some big games for it considering how many people have one.

I think they'll have a bit more trouble getting people to move onto the PS3. The PS2 was IT. The 360 had the extra year and online gaming, the wii has a bit more innovation, PS3 is gaining a different market of people this time around and i'm not so sure all the PS2 faithful are going to join in.

The Dreamcast had an extra year, and Xbox had innovation yet the PS2 still came out on top....
